Original live-tweets: - https://lnkd.in/gfFnPt_X The #NSGC24 Annual Conference recently hosted the Beverly Rollnick Memorial Lecture, "The Cure" with a Side of Trepidation: The Challenges of Gene Therapy for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). This incredible session and the stories the panel shared highlight the complex interplay of medical advancements and patient experiences in SCD treatment. Of central importance is the need for trust-building between the SCD community and providers. The panel emphasized that creating a safe environment for patients, from appropriate triage in emergency rooms to open discussions about new treatment options, is fundamental to advancing care. Genetic counselors are pivotal in helping patients connect with their community and providing crucial education about clinical trials and treatment options. This support is especially vital as we work to expand treatment possibilities, including increasing the pool of matched donors for those considering transplantation. The session underscored the need for a collaborative approach to addressing the challenges of SCD care. Working "with" the SCD community rather than just "for" them is essential, as is actively listening to patients' voices and concerns. This includes addressing the stigma associated with pain management and the fear of being labeled as drug-seekers, which can prevent patients from seeking necessary care. #GeneticCounselors are committed to fostering transparent communication, providing comprehensive patient support, and advocating for the SCD community. By bridging the gap between medical advancements and patient needs, we aim to play a crucial role in improving outcomes and quality of life for individuals with SCD. Thank you to Barbara Harrison, MS, CGC, Aarin Williams, Rebekah Hutchins, Terry J., Lakiea Bailey, Ph.D., Victoria Gray and Taylor John for educating our genetic counseling community about the important issues in SCD care and how our profession can advocate for improved patient care.

National Society of Genetic Counselors reposted this
At the recent National Society of Genetic Counselors #NSGC24 Annual Conference, I attended a great session, "Age of Treatment: The Clinical, Social and Ethical Implications of Genetic Therapies". Brianna Gross Emily Place and @drakshaysharma presented compelling information on #GeneTherapy progress and challenges in a variety of disease states, including #SickleCellDisease (SCD), #DuchenneMuscularDystrophy (DMD) and #SpinalMuscularAtrophy (SMA). SCD remains a progressive condition with irreversible damage and the median age of death is still far too young. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for innovative treatments. While recent years have seen non-curative treatments emerge alongside traditional blood transfusions, bone marrow transplants offer a curative option. However, the lack of matched donors for most patients (especially patients of color!) and the risks of immune response and long-term immunosuppression limit its widespread & equitable application. The FDA's recent approval of two gene therapies, Lyfgenia™ and Casgevy®, marks a significant milestone. However, these advancements come with ethical concerns, including limited access, high costs, very justified mistrust within affected communities, unknown long-term risks, and the complexity of obtaining informed consent. To address these issues effectively, we must involve the SCD community in developing & implementing these therapies. #GeneticCounselors play a vital role in guiding patients through this complex landscape. We must understand patient perspectives, maintain honesty and transparency about what we know and don't know, and help manage realistic expectations regarding gene therapy's potential benefits and risks. Resources like clinicaltrials.gov and national advocacy organizations such as the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation and Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia, Inc. are invaluable for those seeking information on current trials. Seeing how integral genetic counselors are becoming in specialty areas utilizing gene therapies is exciting! What seemed like science fiction when I was in graduate school is happening now and at an accelerating rate. I look forward to seeing more genetic counselors contributing to this evolving field and thank this remarkable panel for educating us on this landscape. Let's go!
