The solar surface, often viewed as a cauldron of hot bubbling plasma and magnetic fields, is also a rich acoustic environment where sound waves propagate. A recent study using data from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope has shed light on the intricate interplay between heat, sound, and magnetic fields in this stellar soundscape - offering new insights into solar dynamics. The groundbreaking study was led by scientists from the NSF National Solar Observatory and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. Big Big Solar Observatory Summer School is in session! NSO scientists are pictured here with graduate students visiting the NSF Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) facility in Big Bear, California. This tour is part of the BBSO Summer School's goal to stimulate the interest of next-generation researchers in using high-resolution solar data taken with large ground-based telescopes. SOLIS was designed and built by the NSO to provide long-term observations of the Sun to better understand the solar activity cycle, sudden energy releases in the solar atmosphere, and solar irradiance changes and their relationship to global change.

For NSO Associate Astronomer Sarah Jaeggli (right), her inspiration draws from renowned British astrophysicist Carole Jordan (left), the first female president of the Royal Astronomical Society who’s groundbreaking work advanced our knowledge of the Sun’s chromosphere. Jordan discovered molecular hydrogen emission in the Sun in the 1970s. She also served as a PhD advisor to scientist Phil Judge, who Jaeggli worked with on the molecular hydrogen line identification. The 2024 Communicating Astronomy with the Public (CAP) conference is underway at La Cité de l'espace in Toulouse, France! Organized by the International Astronomical Union, CAP is the only large-scale, international conference for astronomy communication and brings together science communicators, educators, and other creative personalities. Under this year's theme, "Astronomy Communication in a Hybrid World," NSO's Communications Officer, Evan Pascual, shared a poster highlighting the NSO's outreach & communication campaign from the 2024 total solar eclipse in North America. This hybrid initiative included in-person community engagement and an online eclipse livestream co-hosted with the National Science Foundation. #IAUCAP2024

The National Science Foundation's Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope is seeking a Mechanical Technician to provide support to the Technical Operations team as directed by the Mechanical Technician Group Leader. The Mechanical Technician will be an integral part of the Technical Operations team, responsible for operation and maintenance of telescope equipment ranging from precision optics to pumps. The Mechanical Technician will also participate in the design, fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning of new observatory equipment and systems. https://lnkd.in/gfa3kG2u
