Gold, M.D., who was installed as the ninth president of the University of Nebraska System yesterday 🤝 In remarks following his acceptance of a presidential medallion from Board of Regents Chairman Rob Schafer of Beatrice, Dr. Gold said that the University of Nebraska has a “deeply embedded legacy” of providing affordable education to Nebraskans; academic leadership in areas like health care, agriculture, public policy, early childhood and national security; and athletic success at the highest levels. “And yet, our legacy of excellence is a solid foundation to build upon, but is not adequate,” he said, calling on the extended University of Nebraska community to join together on an “odyssey” to an even higher level of achievement. “Our legacy serves as an inspiration, but not as a roadmap for the pathway ahead.” Gen. (Ret.) John Hyten, who served as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff after a 40-year career in the U.S. Air Force, delivered keynote remarks, reflecting on his long personal friendship and professional partnership with Dr. Gold. “He loves Nebraska. He is all in. He wants this University to be the best in everything it touches,” Gen. Hyten said. “And he will put forth all the energy necessary to make that happen. Academics, leadership, athletics, everything. #NSRIFellow Dr. Craig Allen, who directs the Center for Resilience in Agricultural Working Landscapes at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is leading the panel coordinated by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations in the assessment, “Forests for Social and Economic Resilience.” Past panels have written eight global reports and accompanying policy briefs since April 2007. Allen’s expertise is in ecological resilience, a measure of the ability of a system, like a forest, to withstand disturbance and still keep its structure and function. Typical disturbances for a forest are drought, wildfire, disease and deforestation. As the Internet of Things — the network of items embedded with sensors and software that record and share data — continues to expand, so do possibilities for implementing smart technologies across research fields and aspects of daily life. The Agricultural Internet of Things, or Ag-IoT, has grown rapidly in recent years, offering new innovations and improvements to farmers in Nebraska and beyond. The rapid growth, however, of the Ag-IoT field and deployment of new devices have left security risks unaddressed and devices and data vulnerable. With a $582,987 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace program and the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, or EPSCoR, University of Nebraska-Lincoln computer scientist Nirnimesh Ghose aims to develop solutions to enable smart, scalable and secure wireless operations in a modern farm setting. Ghose, assistant professor in the School of Computing, will collaborate with #NSRIFellow Mehmet Can Vuran, Dale M. Jensen Chair and Professor in the School of Computing, and Yufeng Ge, professor of biological systems engineering, on the project. “The School of Computing has been strategically investing in Agricultural Internet of Things for the past several years,” Vuran said. “As a result, our school has a uniquely talented team of faculty and students in this area. What started as a nine-week immersion in strategic deterrence research with the potential to brief leadership from United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) resulted in two high-level briefs at the command’s headquarters, Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, Nebraska, two posters presented at the 2024 Deterrence Symposium and a photo-op with General Charles Q. Brown Jr., Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Thanks to their leadership, diligence and skills, the 2024 National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) Strategic Deterrence Interns — eleven undergraduate and graduate students, to include four military cadets — contributed to two research projects that will help advance the Nation’s deterrence.
