Investigations into the causes of pressure ulcers frequently demonstrate that variations from standard evidence-based practice contribute to the development of this patient harm. The National Wound Care Strategy Programme has developed recommendations and a clinical pathway for the prevention and management of pressure ulcers. This work aims to reduce pressure ulcers and the harm associated with them and improve patient outcomes and experiences of care. Improving care relating to pressure ulcers, leg and foot ulcers and surgical wounds.
About us
The National Wound Care Strategy Programme (NWCSP) was commissioned by NHS England to improve care relating to pressure ulcers, leg and foot ulcers and surgical wounds. We aim to achieve a consistently high standard of wound care across England by reducing unnecessary variation and improving safety to improve healing rates and reduce patient suffering, spend on inappropriate and ineffective treatments and the amount of clinical time spent on wound care. Our vision is to create lasting change through supporting those responsible for the delivery of care to deliver excellence in assessing and treating people with wounds to optimise healing and minimise the burden of wounds for patients, carers and health and care providers.

To empower patients to take an active role in their healthcare, the National Wound Care Strategy Programme (NWCSP), Health Innovation Network’s Transforming Wound Care programme and the Patient Experience Network (PEN) have created a leaflet to teach patients how to take a photograph of their wound. Developed for patients by patients based on experience and medical information, the leaflet provides hints and tips on best practice with taking wound photographs, including the mechanics of getting the best possible photograph and what photographs should and should not include to assist healthcare providers in providing the best possible care. The leaflet is available as a downloadable PDF in English, Arabic, Bengali, Gujarati, Nepalese, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi (Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi), Romanian, Spanish, Ukrainian and Urdu, with translation funded by Health Innovation East. This leaflet is available on the NWCSP website: https://lnkd.in/e6BQKQEY #WoundImages #WoundCare #HealthcareResources #WoundHealing #DigitalImages

It is estimated that the annual cost to the NHS of managing patients with wounds is between £4.5 billion and £5.1 billion. Of the 2.2 million people with a wound that has not healed within 4 weeks, 29% have an acute wound related to surgery. The NWCSP Surgical Wound Complications recommendations are available on the NWCSP website. The purpose of the recommendations is to provide clear advice to health and care practitioners, service managers and commissioners about the fundamentals of evidence-informed care for people with surgical wound complications treated in England. To further demonstrate the recommended pathway of care, a surgical wound complications clinical pathway is also available. If you have a wound that has not healed yet, you may find these new wound care information leaflets useful! Created with the Patient Experience Network (PEN) through patient-led co-creation activities, the leaflets aim to support people with wounds, giving information such as how to look after a wound at home and how to recognise problems that may need discussing with a health or care professional. The leaflets cover a range of topics: 🔷 Loved one in care (pressure sores) 🔷 How to prevent a pressure sore 🔷 I have a leg ulcer – why am I being referred to a vascular clinic? 🔷 What is a surgical wound? 🔷 Is my surgical wound healing normally? These leaflets have been developed by patients for patients through patient-led group activities, with medical input from clinicians.
