Providing resources and opportunities for African descent students to strive for excellence in every aspect of life.

About us

The National African Student Association (NAFSA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit association founded by a group of passionate individuals who believe, like many, that anyone can make a positive impact on the African continent. The organization's main objective is to ensure that the young African diaspora is able to receive the necessary resources and connections to easily succeed academically and professionally. This would then make it easier for them to help the African continent and it's diaspora community advance economically, culturally and socially. The mission of the National African Student Association is to function as a unifying body for collegiate African student organizations and to provide knowledge and resources for the academic, professional and cultural advancement of our members.

  • Black history is a foundation of strength, a bridge connecting generations, and a blueprint for the future. Rooted in African heritage, carried forward by the resilience of the diaspora, Black excellence continues to shape the world. Here’s how the past, present, and future connect: The Foundation: African civilizations like the empires of Mali, Ghana, and Songhai were centers of knowledge, trade, and culture, laying the groundwork for global Black excellence. The Bridge: Despite adversity, Black communities across the world have preserved traditions, ignited movements, and shaped industries—from the Haitian Revolution to the Civil Rights Movement. The Future: Black innovators, artists, and leaders continue to break barriers in technology, business, and activism, creating a limitless future for future generations. This Black History Month, we honor the foundation laid by our ancestors, the bridge that unites us, and the future we are building together. #blackhistorymonth #africanexcellence #blackexcellence

Hey Linkedin, is it too late for a 2024 recap…I don’t think so! 2024 was a year filled with many firsts and a few lasts. I started my first full-time job and also attended class for the last time as an undergraduate. Here are a few of my favorite moments from last year. In March, I had the privilege of attending the second annual Yale Africa Innovation Symposium at Yale University. I was able to attend this amazing event with New York University's African Student Union. My peers and I attended innovation labs that focused on resolving issues in sectors such as Climate & Sustainability, Financial Services, Healthcare, Technology and more. A few months later, I was invited to speak on my first ever panel! In May, the National African Student Association led a virtual discussion titled: “Harvesting Hope: Unveiling Climate Realities in African Lands.” In this conversation, I explained the impacts of climate change on the continent and how intense weather affects production, transportation and more. I was able to share my own experiences traveling in Senegal during the intense rain season and explain the challenges locals faced while commuting in flooded areas. Not too long after, I was invited to the United Nations for the African Youth Voice Network launch event with the UN Office of the Special Adviser on Africa. This event fostered discussions about Africa pertaining to sustainable development, technological advancement and entrepreneurship. I met many great change makers and motivated professionals. In April, I also received an award from NYU’s Association for African Development for my engagement in African affairs and community involvement. This award was a testament of all the research, interviews and projects I engaged in during my time at NYU. Thank you to all who nominated me! Graduation day! In May, I graduated from NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Studies. Through this program, I was able to create my own major and focus on my interests of global black studies and economic development. A special thanks to all my Gallatin professors who helped me shape my concentration through their complex and interesting courses. What’s new! I am currently working as a full-time client associate at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. I completed my SIE exam and am working on obtaining my license to become a registered client associate. I am also in the process of developing a research paper with the National African Student Association that discusses the intersection of conflict and agriculture in the Sahel region, which will be completed later this month. Thank you to all my professors, peers and managers who have helped me along the way. Wishing you all a successful 2025!

  • We’re thrilled about this partnership that empowers socially conscious young African diaspora leaders—who have deep ties to both the U.S. and Africa and a unique ability to advocate across borders—through engaging modules, in-person sessions at our conference, and a capstone project. We look forward to seeing their impact! #PolicyAdvocacy #AfricanDiaspora #NAfSA #AfricanStudentsAssociation

The Diaspora Advocacy Policy Influencers (DAPI) Program has begun! The Ashoka Diaspora Networks team in partnership with National African Student Association (NAfSA) and The Diaspora Academy had designed a first-of-its kind Policy Advocacy program for African diaspora students across the United States. This first cohort of the DAPI program is specifically designed for socially conscious NAfSA students with a strong interest and desire to understand the US policy landscape, raise awareness on key policy issues and influence policy outcomes for systems change across Africa. This capacity development program, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation*, is comprised of nine online modules, an in-person conference in Atlanta and industry specific capstone projects designed and delivered by the 20 student participants. Stay tuned for on-going updates on this program and for developments leading to the launch of the 2nd cohort. *The findings and conclusions contained this program are those of the program facilitators and do not necessarily reflect positions or policies of the Bill  & Melinda Gates Foundation.

  • The National African Student Association (NAfSA), in collaboration with Ashoka and The Diaspora Academy (TDA) have launched the Policy Advocacy Capacity Building Program! This exciting program aims to engage members who are interested in raising awareness on key policy issues and influence policy outcomes for systems change across Africa and its diaspora communities while abroad. Our inaugural cohort have already completed three modules thus far and have learned so much about policy advocacy work as diaspora youth. Thanks to program funding from the Gates Foundation, these changemakers will have the necessary tools and network to succeed. Stay tuned to hear from some of the participants over the course of the next few weeks about their experiences! • The following events (in no particular order) are just a glimpse into the amazing work happening across all our chapters in 2024. ASA chapters nationwide fostered community and celebrated African culture. Missouri State’s ASA hosted cultural celebrations like a “Fake Wedding” and “African Carnival.” Michigan State’s events included “Afrobeat Jeopardy” and a “Culture Show.” Georgia State focused on community with “Taste of Africa” and an Olympics event. Virginia State offered diverse events from a Spelling Bee to “Rep Your Flag” night. The University of Toledo addressed global issues with “Hope Through Awareness,” celebrated pop culture with “Y2K/Nollywood Night,” and hosted a Thanksgiving dinner and “Ivillage” culinary event. We can’t wait to see what 2025 brings! #NAfSA #ASA #College #africandiaspora #africa #blackhistory #panafrican #african #blackexcellence #blackculture #blackpower #panafricanism #blackgirlmagic #blackconsciousness #culture #blackpeople #blackowned #africanhistory #melanin #blacklove #blackcommunity #nigeria #diaspora #nigeriandiaspora #blackunity
