National STEM Scholars - Nautilus Live Ocean Exploration Trust Science Communication Fellowship applications are now open! Educators at all grade levels are eligible to apply for participation in the Nautilus Corps of Exploration in this year-long experience that includes a training workshop at the University of Rhode Island’s School of Oceanography and sailing 3-4 weeks as part of the Exploration team on a deep-sea oceanographic expedition. All expenses are covered, including travel and substitute costs. Submissions are due January 3, 2025! The 24th Annual Rainbow of Heroes Walk at Duke was held on September 28th to honor, remember, celebrate, cherish, and reunite patients, families, medical staff, volunteers, and supporters of the Duke Pediatric Transplant and Cellular Therapy (PTCT) Family Support Program. NSCF’s Pediatric Promise Fund at PTCT covers copays and deductibles for children participating in clinical trials for rare diseases when those out-of-pocket costs are beyond a family’s means. Congratulations to NSCF research partner Dr. Pinar Mesci for having a recent paper featured on the cover of the August issue of Stem Cell Reports! The study uses brain organoids to demonstrate that faulty microglia, the “janitor” cells of the central nervous system, may be a potential therapeutic target in Rett syndrome, a rare disorder linked to autism.
