Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation reposted this
NARF recently joined the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation in two trainings on the National Historic Preservation Act's consultation process. “Native Hawaiians have long sought inclusion in decisions that impact sacred places and our survival as Kanaka Maoli, yet seldom have we been allowed to participate,” said NHLC Senior Staff Attorney Ashley Obrey. “The trainings ... empower and prepare community members and leaders who have been invited to give input on proposed projects on Mauna Kea.” #MaunaKea

Mahalo for joining the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation at this years Native Hawaiian Convention. Whether it was learning the path forward surrounding Native Hawaiian intellectual property to discussing water rights and protection of wahi pana at Mauna Kea and Mauna ʻAla, NHLC was honored to participate as speakers on four panels at the convention. The Convention is a special and important gathering of our lāhui. Mahalo to the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) for another impactful and manaful event!

On this date in 1897 James Kaulia along with the men's and women's hui aloha ʻāina began collecting signatures for the Kūʻē petitions. The Kūʻē petitions gathered the signatures of over 21,000 Native Hawaiians to protest the annexation of Hawaiʻi into the United States. Proud to litigate this case on behalf of HHCA beneficiaries.
After years of litigation, the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court ruled that the DOT was wrong to claim the lands under the Maunakea Access Road and that DHHL breached its trust duties by allowing it to do so. To read the full article, go to https://lnkd.in/gb8fbMZ8
