Complex sites call for creative solutions. We prefer to manage established native vegetation with prescribed fire, but it's not feasible on every site. Landfills and solar sites are generally not conducive to prescribed fire due to risk of damage to infrastructure. "Prescribed Haying" can replicate fire by removing built-up residual cover. We are using this practice on the Dane County Landfill site in Madison, Wisconsin.

Fostering diverse and resilient ecological landscapes to support biodiversity.
About us
NRE seeks to empower and inform land stakeholders with the best available practices and applications of the science of landscape-scale ecological restoration. Our mission is to enhance biodiversity by improving water quality and wildlife habitat through the pragmatic application of adaptive ecological restoration concepts. Prior to starting Native Range Ecological, Clay Frazer and Dan Fuhs worked together for ten years building one of Wisconsin’s most reputable ecological consulting and restoration businesses. Clay and Dan started NRE in the fall of 2022 with a single guiding principal in mind; “Truly sustainable restoration designs, specifications, and ecological restoration plans can only come from those who have actually done the work”. Clay and Dan have paid their dues in this business, and they have plenty of dirt under their nails. They have each built their careers and knowledge through hands-on, boots-on-the-ground land management and ecological restoration experiences. They have been on the front lines of hundreds of restoration projects and have worn many different hats on a wide variety of restoration project types in the upper Midwest. Starting a new ecological consulting business means more than just offering a higher level of responsiveness and customer service than the corporations that dominate restoration these days. It also means getting out of the office and rolling up your sleeves in the field whenever you get the chance. This keeps our field skills sharp and lends itself to restoration plans, specifications, and designs that are more practical, realistic, pragmatic, straightforward, and economical for our clients. Truly viable and sustainable restoration plans are written by those who have actually been in the trenches and done the work they are describing on paper.

NRE co-owner Daniel Fuhs is now a Certified Erosion, Sediment, and Stormwater Inspector in Wisconsin (CESSWI). Dan recently acquired this certification which requires extensive knowledge of regulations and technical standards associated with erosion, sediment, and stormwater management. This certification is intended to meet federal requirements for both the US EPA and NPDES definitions of "Qualified Personnel". Dan is now qualified to conduct inspections for compliance with erosion, sediment, and stormwater management regulations and permits, such as SWPPP. Congrats, Dan!

Following the development of Vegetation Management Plans for each site, NRE will be overseeing native hydroseeding on four new projects this spring. Three of these projects will stabilize coastal Lake Michigan bluffs. Last spring, we coordinated and oversaw native hydroseeding on another section of the Concordia University Wisconsin bluff. Our partners on this project were EOR, Edgerton Contractors, Kulig Contracting, and Profile Products.
