NRGI supports informed, inclusive decision-making about natural resources and the energy transition.
About us
NRGI supports informed, inclusive decision-making about natural resources and the energy transition. We partner with reformers in government and civil society to design and implement just policies based on evidence and the priorities of citizens in resource-rich developing countries. We seek to address power imbalances, both nationally and globally. Our approach accounts for political realities, and advances equity in voice, influence and access to information. We envision a world where natural resources enable fair, prosperous and sustainable societies, instead of undermining them. NRGI exists because decisions about how natural resources are governed determine the wellbeing of people in resource-rich countries, and of the planet.

A COP of connections. That’s how my colleague Ana Carolina González Espinosa described COP16 – and it resonates so much. Over the course of a busy two weeks, my colleagues were building connections between supporting biodiversity and the responsible scale up of transition minerals. Between the just fossil fuel phaseout and ecosystem restoration and reparations for environmental and community impacts. Between protecting nature and fighting mineral sector corruption. Between partners spanning climate action, resource governance, environmental and human rights defenders. Between ministries of environment, energy, finance and natural resources. Between the work of the UN Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, COP16 and looking ahead to COP29 and COP30. And of course, between our own colleagues from Ghana, the DRC, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the US. A highlight – among many – was the launch of a Colombia-led initiative to advance biodiversity, combat illegal trading, and support mineral governance and a just transition, putting equity for developing producer countries at the top of the climate agenda. 🌎 Learn more from my full remarks: https://lnkd.in/eY7Ehhjk 📰 Or see this Spanish-language article with my perspectives on the UN minerals panel and the Colombia traceability initiative: https://lnkd.in/eu4Pp4BN 💪 Or read this excellent piece by my colleague Susannah Fitzgerald: https://lnkd.in/eqWkT3Wm Leaving with a full head and heart and tremendous gratitude to the wonderful Natural Resource Governance Institute team! Launched at #COP16, Colombia’s proposal for new framework for traceable and transparent mining is a significant milestone, placing producing countries at the forefront to address critical economic, social, and environmental challenges. It also demands global accountability. As highlighted by NRGI’s Suneeta Kaimal, the agreement presents a unique opportunity to ensure that climate action translates into tangible benefits for communities while preserving our environment and biodiversity. A holistic and multi-stakeholder approach will be vital in designing this framework, ensuring that it meets the needs of those most affected by the mining sector. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e3jF4uYU
