More than 40 years ago, Howard Riggert, a retired contractor for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, went underway aboard the first boat of a new class of ballistic missile submarines, during the boat’s sea trials in 1981. Fast-forward to earlier this month and he was once again invited aboard the submarine he helped create. “My fondest memory working as part of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program has been my participation in what has become the pride of the Navy, and, representing my home state, the Ohio class of submarines,” said Riggert. #peoplegetthingsdone | #technicalexcellence | #integrityalways | #teamnavalreactors Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eJejg5Jg
About us
The Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP), or Naval Reactors, is a joint Department of Navy and Department of Energy organization responsible for all matters pertaining to U.S. Navy nuclear propulsion. The NNPP’s conservative design practices and stringent operating procedures have resulted in the demonstrated safety record of naval nuclear propulsion plants. The mission of the Naval Reactors, is to provide militarily effective nuclear propulsion plants and ensure their safe, reliable, and long-lived operation. This mission requires the combination of fully trained U.S. Navy men and women with ships that excel in endurance, stealth, speed, and independence from logistics supply chains. Naval Reactors organic statute, 50 U.S.C. §§ 2406, 2511, codifying Presidential Executive Order 12344 set forth the total responsibility of Naval Reactors for all aspects of the Navy's nuclear propulsion, including research, design, construction, testing, operation, maintenance, and ultimate disposition of naval nuclear propulsion plants. The Program's responsibility includes all related facilities, radiological controls, environmental safety, and health matters, as well as selection, training, and assignment of personnel. All of this work is accomplished by a lean network of dedicated research laboratories, nuclear-capable shipyards, equipment contractors and suppliers, and training facilities that are centrally controlled by a small headquarters staff.

Originally hailing from the small town of Clinton, Kentucky, the Naval Reactors Representative in Guam recently celebrated a remarkable milestone—30 years of dedicated service to his country, culminating in his promotion to the rank of Commander in the US Navy. "Naval Reactors is simply the most extraordinary organization in the Navy," said Cmdr. Michael "Mike" G. Reilly, Jr., pride radiating from him. "To think we've overseen dozens of reactor plants without incident for over 75 years is remarkable. I'm proud to play a small part in that legacy." #peoplegetthingsdone | #technicalexcellence | #challengewhatispossible Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e-q_x9Yd

With USS George Washington (CVN 73)'s departure from the San Diego area Oct. 8, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier has once again assumed the role of the US Navy’s only forward-deployed carrier. “George Washington departed San Diego to begin the final phase of its redeployment to Japan, where it will once again serve as the Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier,” said Rear Adm. Greg Newkirk, commander of Carrier Strike Group 5. “It will take up station alongside the always-ready forces postured in the area of responsibility. George Washington, with all its capabilities, represents America's commitment to stability in the region where it will sail and fly with our partner navies as we strive to move from interoperability to true interchangeability.” #challengewhatispossible | #unmatchedpropulsion | #alliesandpartners Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eayHa9r9
