In case you missed it last weekend, NAVSEA’s own Alicia Aadnesen and Debbie Simmons had the pleasure of christening USNS Lucy Stone (T-AO 209). As Ship Introduction Specialists in our Program Executive Office, Ships (PEO Ships), Aadnesen and Simmons were selected by the Secretary of the Navy as sponsors for the USNS Lucy Stone. As central figures of the ship’s life, sponsors maintain a notable relationship with the ship, participating in the ship’s many ceremonial milestones throughout their lifetime. The ship’s namesake, Lucy Stone, was an American orator, abolitionist and suffragist who advocated for women’s rights and freedom for slaves. “It was a profound honor for us to be invited to serve as the sponsors of USNS Lucy Stone, and to honor a woman who dedicated her life to freedom and equality for all. We were filled with pride as we watched the beautiful ship slide down the building ways into the San Diego Bay,” said Aadnesen and Simmons. “Our heartfelt gratitude, fervent prayers, and very best wishes will sail with LUCY STONE and her crew on all of their future journeys.” Congratulations to Alicia and Debbie on this grand and historic career moment! 🎉 For more information about USNS Lucy Stone view: https://lnkd.in/eWXnpjiM To watch a recording of the event: https://lnkd.in/e_haMH96

Today, the U.S. Navy awarded contracts for the procurement of one America-class amphibious assault ship (LHA) and three San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock (LPD) ships to Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), Ingalls Shipbuilding Division. The awards, executed across two separate contracts, utilized a congressionally authorized multi-ship procurement strategy, and is projected to achieve more than $901 million in cost savings. In alignment with the Office of the Secretary of the Navy's maritime statecraft initiatives to make naval shipbuilding more cost effective while promoting shipyard stability and investment, these long-term contract agreements provide stable shipyard workload well into the early 2030s, providing a consistent demand signal to vendors. Time for a brief #NAVSEANews break … NAVSEA Executive Director Chris Miller and other U.S. Navy leaders focused on positive trends in surface ship maintenance and the need to think, act and operate differently in order to raise baseline readiness to achieve 80% combat surge ready ships and subs at this week’s American Society of Naval Engineers Fleet Maintenance and Modernization Symposium. Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/eMg4G6VV In ship milestone news, the future USS Robert E. Simanek (ESB 7) was delivered to the U.S. Navy, Sept. 12. Optimized to support a variety of maritime based missions, ESB 7 also includes a four spot V-22 sized flight deck, mission deck and hangar, and was designed around four core capabilities: aviation facilities, berthing, equipment staging support, and command and control assets. See picture 2 and read more about ESB 7 here: https://lnkd.in/ezFJD8ke And, in case you’ve missed it, USS New Jersey (SSN 796) was commissioned and is garnering attention as the first fast-attack submarine designed to support a fully gender-integrated crew! As a Block IV Virginia-class submarine with updated features that increase its underway time while reducing lifecycle costs, SSN 796 will be the fastest, most advanced, fast-attack submarine to date. NAVSEA joins the Navy and the Nation in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month 2024. This year's theme, "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together," reflects the profound influence and historical contributions Hispanic Americans have on our country. From the U.S. Navy's third-ranking ace of all time with 23 aerial victories, Eugene A. Valencia Jr. and retired Captain, leader and mentor Mery-Angela Sanabria Katson, to our current Secretary of the Navy and the more than 14% of the Navy’s total force who share Hispanic descent, our rich culture serves to strengthen our collective identity. Our priority of Building a Culture of Warfighting Excellence focuses on the strength of our people who provide the force resilience and readiness required to meet NAVSEA, and the Navy’s, missions.
