Deer, fox and rabbits...oh, my! This week, our Loma Land project—an immersive welcome experience at Loma Linda University Medical Center—surpassed the creation of 75,000 animals since opening. That’s more than 250 animals per day!     Loma Land greets young patients with an idyllic forest of animated creatures, rustling plants and the gentle sounds of flowing water. The digital experience allows children to choose from a variety of animals, customize them with unique colors and accessories, interact with them and then release them into the “wild” to play.     Which animal is the most popular? The cuddly bear comes in first, with deer, fox, rabbit and raccoon following close behind. https://lnkd.in/gnN_QGp2 NBBJ | ESI Design #healthcare #healthcaredesign #experiencedesign #lomaland #esidesign #nbbjdesign

With the 2024 summer Olympics behind us, we're looking forward to the 2028 games in Los Angeles, CA. Instead of building primarily new venues, events will be hosted across the city’s numerous existing sports venues, arenas and conference centers—including the NBBJ-designed Crypto.com arena.     A Los Angeles icon, the arena (formerly known as Staples Center) departs from the traditional arena box shape with an oval inside bowl enveloped by a circular plaza to accommodate various public uses. In keeping with its “flexible” design—the venue is home to multiple professional sports franchises as well as numerous concerts, events and award ceremonies—the arena will host the gymnastics events in 2028.    Learn more here on Dezeen: https://lnkd.in/g87gReb8  #sports #sportsarchitecture #architecture #olympics #LA28 #NBBJDesign

An estimated 20% of the population identifies as neurodivergent. Yet the spaces where we live and work rarely consider the needs and preferences of neurodiverse individuals. However, as awareness around how people with autism, dyslexia, ADHD and other conditions see the world increases, architects are focused on designing spaces that accommodate a range of physical and mental abilities. In the South China Morning Post SCMP, NBBJ Partner Jonathan Ward and Principal Philip Schmunk discuss designing for inclusivity through the lens of the Lower School campus of California’s Westmark School, which serves students with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia. “You’re changing the way you think about buildings by thinking about an inclusive process and equity for all,” says Ward. Adds Schmunk, “We thought about the whole campus as a classroom. Learning happens all across the campus.” https://lnkd.in/gkbvPMNU 📷 Ty Cole #education #schooldesign #inclusivity #neurodiversity #nbbjdesign

Designed to bring together a universe of creative makers under one roof, the new Warner Bros. Discovery Second Century project in Burbank, CA provides a workplace experience as iconic as the brand’s famous characters and stories.     “We designed spaces where animator teams could sit together based on the shows they were on, in addition to providing production space, edit bays, audio mix bays and such,” says Ashlie Fuller, NBBJ Principal and lead interior designer on the project. Creative touches like floorwide color motifs inspired by the company’s location in Southern California, a hospitality-inspired coffee bar, desks designed with hoods to give animators private space to create and living rooms for each show to encourage team collaboration add to the creative and productive nature of the workplace.      Creating a sense of fun was also key. One-of-a-kind furniture items, memorabilia and art—more than 500 pieces were cataloged and moved into the buildings!—reflect the creative work taking place inside. “People want to know that they’re part of something greater,” says Fuller, “and being able to display the legacy of the company is really important.”       Read more about the Second Century project in Emmy Magazine (note: login required): https://lnkd.in/gDP2a62t

The built environment shapes communities, both literally and figuratively. But when the community is left out of the design process, it can create solutions that are ineffective or unintentionally cause harm. Instead, bringing the community along as co-creators—helping shape the vision for the places and spaces where they spend their lives—lays the groundwork for a successful, inclusive design process.      Here, NBBJ Principal Megha Parekh Sinha, AICP details five steps to ensure community-focused outcomes: first, establish motivations by asking questions at the onset of the design process. Second, craft the engagement strategy. Third, be creative and flexible. Fourth, facilitate dialogue. And lastly, translate community input into design outcomes. https://lnkd.in/eJDWHU_j

Go green! The benefits of green spaces are many, from enhanced cognitive function to boosted creativity. Green spaces also absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, contributing to biodiversity conservation. To celebrate the verdant vitality of this viridescent hue, we’re featuring some of our favorite green spaces from NBBJ projects around the globe: 1. Nanjing Eco-Island Exhibition Center, Nanjing, China: Native plantings cover more than 30 percent of the landscape to help control water runoff and reduce erosion, while local trees and shrubs provide a dramatic welcome. 2. Zhejiang-Based Large Internet Company Campus, Hangzhou, China: At this corporate campus, each employee’s workspace is less than a minute from outside green spaces. 3. Amazon Spheres, Seattle, WA: A multi-story, glass-enclosed workplace containing tens of thousands of plants and trees from around the world, the Spheres are designed to help Amazon employees do their best work while surrounded by nature. 4. Meridian Center for Health, Seattle, WA: The preservation of an existing on-site park enhanced with lush, native plantings helps manage stormwater and provide a habitat for ducks and native species.

Learning differences affect 1 in 5 children. Yet most educational environments are not designed to intentionally accommodate neurodiverse students. Enter the Lower School Campus of Westmark School, which infuses nature, a simplified color palette and noise-dampening design features that enable its students to learn in the diverse modes that suit them best. Designed around a sycamore tree at its heart, the school’s inviting courtyard, deep roof overhangs, pine cross-laminated timber and outdoor play spaces bring warmth, choice and agency to its young students. According to author and futurist Daniel Pink, the employment challenges society faces are a result of the jobs we’ve steadily relied on becoming increasingly less important. In other words, roles that are “routine, rule-based, single discipline and managed” are disappearing, while work that is conceptual, empathetic and big picture—creative work—is on the rise.     How can the office foster and encourage this creativity? In collaboration with the University of Washington, we collectively pursued a deeper understanding of creativity to guide how we design the spaces and relationships that allow people to do their best thinking. Here, NBBJ Partner Ryan Mullenix discusses our findings. https://lnkd.in/gtq3AEms

It’s hard to believe it’s already been one year since the opening of the Nickerson Gardens playground project! Located within the largest public housing development west of the Mississippi River, NBBJ and our experience design studio, NBBJ | ESI Design, created a colorful, cheerful park for kids in the Los Angeles neighborhood. Misting poles and canopies provide a place to cool off, and a carousel, swings, slides, climbing spaces and an indoor adult fitness center using recycled materials offer a fun, sustainable, easy-to-maintain exercise experience. https://lnkd.in/g3uerbtq   📸 Ty Cole

We’re proud to share that the Montage Health Ohana Campus for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health is a finalist in the SBID® - Society of British & International Interior Design Awards!     The UK-based awards program recognizes and celebrates design excellence across a broad range of categories from interior design to product.     Ohana’s design applies the latest in neuroscience research to provide an inclusive, healing environment for pediatric patients, families, and caregivers. The building creates a welcoming embrace inside and out, fostering a sense of comfort. A series of softly curving one-story volumes unites an outpatient clinic, a 16-bed residential program and amenities.    Learn more about this project and cast your vote here: https://lnkd.in/eTi2PQjg
