Last week Southcoast Health and New Bedford Community Health celebrated the opening of the newly renovated Southcoast Health Laboratory and Radiology Services. This renovation comes with a new 3D Mammogram machine, offering our patients and the patients of Southcoast Health the latest and most advanced technology for mammogram services. Providing these services onsite allows patients to get most of their services with one stop at the Health Center. We are grateful for our long-term partnership serving the neediest families in New Bedford.

Exciting news! ✨ Recently New Bedford Community Health, thanks to a generous donation of $10,000 from Tufts Health Plan, a Point32Health company, was able to complete an additional Patient Financial Services room sponsored by Tufts Health Plan. Our Patient Financial Services Department assists patients and community members in obtaining health insurance from public programs and other sources. In the past year, the department had over 15,000 visits from people who were in need of assistance in applying for health insurance. Thanks to the $10,000 donation from Tufts Health Plan, NBCH was able to see 3,801 visits in that room alone in the past year.

April is National Minority Health Month. Did you know that, while health disparities among racial and ethnic minority and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations continue to be a major challenge in the United States, Community Health Centers are part of the solution? Serving 1 in 7 people of color, health centers provide culturally competent care that improves patient health outcomes and reduces these disparities. #NMHM24 #HealthEquity

February is #BlackHistoryMonth! This month we recognize the contributions not only made nationally by African Americans but also by those locally. Our community is stronger because of so many people past and present. Today we celebrate Dr. Juan Bennett Drummond, the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in the state of Massachusetts. Born in New Bedford on June 7th, 1864, Dr. Drummond was the first African American woman to become a licensed doctor in the state of Massachusetts. Dr. Drummond was the daughter of Morris Bennett, who was a native of St. Helena, and Maria McCurry Bennett of Fall River. Dr. Drummond was a descendant through her mother, of abolitionist Paul Cuffe (1759-1817). She was a member of the New Bedford High School Class of 1883 and graduated from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1888. During the early years of her practice, she took care of patients out of her home. Later, she moved her practice to an office above the old State Theater on Purchase Street. Dr. Drummond practiced medicine for 34 years. Dr. Drummond was a community activist and one of several women who were instrumental in founding the New Bedford Home for the Aged, a nursing home dedicated to helping senior citizens. She passed away on November 4, 1926, at the age of 62 in her home at 275 Kempton Street. #BlackHealthandWellness #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM #History #BHM24 #BHM2024

Today's #BlackHistoryMonth feature is Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller: The First African American Psychiatrist Solomon Carter Fuller’s grandparents were medical missionaries in Liberia, and he grew up with a strong interest in medicine. After earning his medical degree in 1897 from Boston University, he became the first African American psychiatrist. In 1904, he began pioneering work with the psychiatrist and neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer in Germany, studying the traits of dementia. Dr. Fuller was the first to translate much of Alzheimer’s work into English, including research regarding Auguste Deter, the person with the first reported case of the disease. When he returned to the United States, Fuller continued research on Alzheimer’s disease as well as schizophrenia, depression, and other mental illness. #BlackHealthandWellness #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM #History #BHM24 #BHM2024

February is #NationalChildrensDentalHealthMonth, an opportunity to stress that dental care for children is important to overall health. The majority of Community Health Centers provide dental services onsite to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status. Over the past decade, health centers have rapidly expanded the availability of dental services to meet increasing demand from patients and payors for high-quality, low-cost, comprehensive preventive and primary care. #NCDHM #OralHealth #ValueCHCs
