Standing Up Against Retail Crime          The recent smash-and-grab at a minority-owned 7-Eleven in Los Angeles (https://lnkd.in/eB4F6ZC2) is a stark reminder of the escalating retail crime affecting small businesses. Unfortunately, incidents like this are all too common. In 2023, retailers across the U.S. faced a shocking $121.6 billion in losses due to theft, with California leading the nation at $8.72 billion in losses, according to the National Retail Federation.          This rise in retail crime also directly impacts customers, communities, and residents. The 7-Eleven that was robbed is a neighborhood staple, dedicated to serving the local community, but it now faces the devastating financial and emotional costs of this incident.          It’s critical that Californians take action by voting Yes on Proposition 36, which will increase accountability for repeat offenders of retail theft and tackle one of the root causes of crime by offering drug treatment programs for offenders struggling with addiction. By addressing both theft and addiction, Prop 36 provides a balanced approach to reduce organized retail crime, offering much-needed relief to business owners.          We encourage everyone to also reach out to your local and state lawmakers to address this issue through legislation. Retail crimes are not victimless—they affect us all.
