Exciting news! Norfolk Southern is proud to partner with the National Center for Civil and Human Rights with a $500,000 commitment to support its transformative expansion. Our gift will help create new spaces for education, dialogue, and action—ensuring the lessons of history continue to inspire change today. As part of this partnership, we are honored to have the Freedom Room named in recognition of our commitment—one of three new classrooms in the upcoming Shirley Clarke Franklin Pavilion. This expansion will provide immersive experiences, interactive exhibits, and vital resources to engage visitors of all ages in civil and human rights education. At Norfolk Southern, we believe in the power of history to shape the future, and we are dedicated to strengthening the communities where we live and work. We are grateful to support the Center’s mission and can’t wait to see the impact this partnership will have. Together, we are moving history forward. 🚂✨ #NorfolkSouthern #CivilAndHumanRights #Philanthropy #Education #CommunityImpact #MovingHistoryForward https://lnkd.in/e6RcSkm8

We couldn't be prouder!
We (Jill Savitt (CEO), Darrin Sims (Dir. of T + T), and I) picked up our Emmy statue today for the (re)Defining History documentary on the 1906 Atlanta Race Massacre and got to celebrate with our WABE partners. The Emmy will be displayed in National Center for Civil and Human Rights once we re-open after our expansion project. Calling her “generational, historical and significant,” the National Center for Civil and Human Rights announced on Thursday that one of two new wings currently being constructed at the 10-year-old facility will be named after former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin. At a celebration attended by more than 600 people, Franklin was visibly moved by the recognition. Set to open this fall, the Shirley Clarke Franklin Pavilion will feature classrooms, event spaces and a rooftop for gatherings. “Our center honors the big names of the past: Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, Nelson Mandela, the Freedom Riders,” said @A.J. Robinson, president of Central Atlanta Progress and vice chair of the center’s board. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVVeZi4F

We’re honored to be featured on WABE for our work in truth-telling and historical justice. Atlanta is planning a memorial at Westside Park to recognize victims of forced labor and convict leasing—an often-overlooked chapter of our history. Through our Truth + Transformation program, we’re hosting community engagement initiatives (including tours of the park, educational sessions, and an AR experience) that allow the public to collectively envision the kind of memorial they want to see. The Center for Civil and Human Rights is committed to ensuring these stories are acknowledged and remembered. This initiative is a step toward reckoning with the past and fostering a more just future.
