Accelerating Progress to Reduce Childhood Obesity

About us

NCCOR brings together four of the nation’s leading research funders – the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and U.S. Department of Agriculture – to address the problem of childhood obesity in America. These leading national organizations: work in tandem to manage projects and reach common goals; combine funding to make the most of available resources; and share insights and expertise to strengthen research. NCCOR's mission is to accelerate progress in reducing childhood obesity. The Collaborative focuses on efforts that have the potential to benefit children, teens, and their families, and the communities in which they live. A special emphasis is put on the populations and communities in which obesity rates are the highest and rising the fastest. A recipient of an HHSinnovates Award and the NIH Director’s Award, NCCOR has been recognized as a public-private partnership that brings synergy and innovation to combat childhood obesity. In building on each other’s strengths, the CDC, NIH, RWJF, and USDA are advancing the field through complementary and joint initiatives. • 📢 Students! Are you working on creating a logic model for your research projects? Need some guidance? Check out this example of a logic model that presents inputs, strategies & activities and outcomes of community engagement interventions designed to address childhood obesity. This model highlights outcomes across various levels: - Individual/family - Provider/health care system - Community/built environment - Policy Explore this example and discover other resources to support your intervention goals on NCCOR’s website: https://lnkd.in/e-f9SE4v #NCCOR #ChildhoodObesity #ObesityResearch

  • NCCOR’s Guide to Methods for Assessing Childhood Obesity was created to describe and walk users through the use of various methods of adiposity measurement and assessment. The goal is to help users select the most appropriate method of measuring adiposity in children for their population-level research. Who can benefit from using this guide? - Researchers - Public health practitioners - Other professionals and practitioners with an interest in evaluating weight-related outcomes This guide includes six case studies walking you through measuring body composition in population health research. • Last year, NCCOR hosted a Connect & Explore webinar titled “Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Treatment of Children and Adolescents with Obesity.” Lead authors Sarah E. Hampl, MD, FAAP and Sandra Hassink, MD, FAAP as well as CDC’s Cynthia Ogden, PhD, were the key speakers at this webinar. They discussed the development of the clinical guidelines’ key recommendations, which describes the standard of care for evaluating and treating children with overweight and obesity and related comorbidities. The promoted approach not only considers the child’s health status, but also the family system, community context and resources for treatment. The webinar also provided an overview of CDC’s “Extended BMI-for-age Growth Charts,” which extended the BMI percentiles based on data for children and adolescents with obesity. If you are a researcher or practitioner in obesity treatment and prevention, this webinar can be useful for your work. • Are you interested in using our Measures Registry? Our student hub offers case studies to help guide you through selecting an appropriate measure for your work. Let’s go through a case study that uses a community health assessment to understand the food environment of a rural locality. 🔎 Background: You are leading a community health assessment to gather information on healthy and unhealthy food marketing to children in grocery and corner stores. You need to locate data from the county to assess food marketing practices and must find a survey or other tool to help collect this information. 🤔 Considerations: Consider how you would like to collect this food marketing information – from children or parents directly, from local businesses, and/or from observations of local media. The tool will also need to be easy to use in a variety of grocery or corner store settings. 📏 Measure selection: You decide that an environmental, observational tool will be best for your assessment. Using the NCCOR Measures Registry, select the “Food Environment” domain, followed by “Environmental Observation,” and further narrow the selection by choosing “Small Town/Rural.” Check out this case study on our website to find out which measure was selected for the study. https://ow.ly/Gkak50TraPr #NCCOR #ChildhoodObesity #Nutrition

  • With #OPUSII one day away, we’re taking a moment to spotlight the first part of this workshop, which took place on June 4-5, 2024. OPUS I featured insightful presentations from leading obesity–prevention and public health experts – a two–day event with two keynote speakers and six panel discussions on diverse topics. The workshop focused on best practices in obesity prevention research, with a specific emphasis on community engagement and systems-level change viewed through an equity lens. We look forward to continuing these important conversations at OPUS II on October 9-10, with a focus on new methodologies for evaluating PSE interventions.
