Preschool age dance classes can be some of the most challenging to teach, and dance teachers may be uncomfortable working with students in this age group for a variety of reasons. Moreover, even though it is vital to provide preschool age dance students with a strong foundation in dance technique and social skills, these classes are often left to less experienced dance teachers. Our latest blog post offers suggestions for dance educators working with preschool age dance students, with a focus on how to make meaningful connections with them. As dance educators, we have a front row seat to the growth and transformation students experience through involvement in dance. How do we make sure our students are getting opportunities to expand their collaboration, flexibility, imagination, and innovation in our dance programs? One way is through the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA)! Opening an NHSDA chapter can not only help you give national recognition for the exceptional work students are already doing, it will also help you add additional elements to your program to create more college and career-ready dancers. Learn more about how the National Honor Society for Dance Arts can empower your dancers to succeed in college and beyond at https://lnkd.in/g6i5gTNH

The latest post from NDEO's Dance Education Blog: "Because preschoolers are developing the capacity to reason or use logic, they may not respond to the same kind of behavioral redirection or incentives that work to keep older students on task. They are still learning how to communicate their needs and express what they are feeling,....."

I can't believe these photos are almost 10 years apart! I attended my first National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) conference as a student poster presenter. I was shy, worried if my ideas measured up to others, and uncertain about whether I had a place in the dance field. By the end of that conference, I knew I wanted to give it a shot. Fast forward almost 10 years, and I recently attended my second NDEO conference—this time as a presenter. I felt more confident in the material I was sharing but still found myself wondering, “Am I doing it right? Am I doing enough?” Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of studying, working, and researching with amazing people in the dance community who have taught me invaluable lessons that I apply to both my work and life. That’s the beauty of being surrounded by supportive, passionate, and driven individuals! I returned from this conference to my teaching space with a big smile and a newfound boost of confidence. I’ve learned that it’s okay to have questions, and doubts, and not have everything figured out. What matters is that you try—work on your ideas, give yourself the chance to fail, and learn from it. A big thank you to everyone I connected with at the conference! The conversations had such a positive impact on me. Special thanks to Melissa Greenblatt and her team for creating such a supportive and inspiring space. Cheers to the journey!

Tricia Kohler, our Creative Learning Engagements Manager, had the opportunity to attend the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) Conference in Seattle last week! With 250+ sessions packed into three incredible days, Tricia connected with fellow dance educators, diving into workshops and classes tailored to inspire and elevate our work in dance education. Connecting with peers and experts at NDEO was inspiring, and we're excited to bring fresh ideas back to our work.

Coming back from National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) National Conference 2024 with such a full cup. Listening to and learning from some of the most prominent and influential dance educators was invaluable. Getting involved in conversations about dance, past, present and future, sparked so much passion and enthusiasm for this side of the industry. Even more humbling is that Sarah Maloney and I’s poster presentation of our pilot study, “Harmful vs Helpful: A Gen-Z View on Dance Fitness” was selected as one of 14 poster presentations. This study takes a qualitative look at how Gen-Z dancers are using cross-fitness modalities as an additive to their training post-Pandemic. We had so many great conversations during our presentation and were grateful to everyone who took time to stop by and see our work. Special thanks to our mentor Robin Kish for guiding and encouraging us through this process. A topic that stemmed from her anatomy class fall semester of our junior year now coming to fruition. Also a huge thank you to Chapman SGA for helping fund this conference and making this opportunity possible! Excited to continue researching and advocating for dancers!
