How Do We Realize the Potential of the Arts to Support Health and Wellbeing in the United States? This Arts & Health Pre-Summit Caucus Report explores the possibilities! Published by the Jameel Arts & Health Lab in collaboration with NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, Harvard University, and the University of Florida’s Center for Arts in Medicine, the report presents a summary of key learnings from the Arts and Health Caucus held in advance of Healing, Bridging, Thriving: A Summit on Arts and Culture in our Communities, co-hosted by The White House Domestic Policy Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. This day-long event was a first-of-its-kind convening to share insights and explore opportunities for arts organizations, arts practitioners, and artists to contribute to the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities, invigorate physical spaces, fuel democracy, and foster equitable outcomes. Keynotes, panels, and performances garnered support at these intersections and built on the momentum of President Biden’s 2022 Executive Order focused on promoting the arts and humanities in the United States (US) as “essential to the wellbeing, health, vitality, and democracy of our Nation. Meet Alyssa Vaughn, a U.S. Army veteran who competed for the first time at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Vamc Creative Arts Festival on September 10th. We're thrilled to share that all three of Alyssa's entries have advanced for selection to the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. Alyssa received virtual art therapy from Creative Forces CAT Gretchen Miller MA, LPAT, ATR-BC, and shared that meeting Gretchen in person and seeing other veterans' artwork was the highlight of the festival. Reflecting on the value of art therapy for veterans, Alyssa said: "It's really the only thing that helps me. I can talk all day long, but to sit and focus on something and create something seems to help me more than anything else... it's important for our mental health to have those [resources] available and accessible." Thank you, Alyssa, for sharing your story and reminding us of the restorative power of art. 🎨💙 📸 Image 1: Alyssa Vaughn at the NE Ohio Creative Arts Festival with her art entries, which advanced to the national stage. This week, we are spotlighting two veterans who competed in the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System Creative Arts Festival on September 10th and had entries that advanced to the national stage. First up is Donna Harge, a U.S. Army veteran whose poem "Spectrums of Visions in Prisms" was selected for national judging. Donna recited her piece at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Vamc, and her words captivated the judges. Donna works closely with Creative Forces creative arts therapists (CATs), music therapist Karen Olean, and art therapist Gretchen Miller MA, LPAT, ATR-BC, who have facilitated her trauma recovery. She shares, "I respect and trust them both. And they are totally instrumental in my peace and undescribed potential." We're so happy about Donna's achievement and the incredible impact creative arts therapies have on veterans like her.
