On August 9, 2024, the North Florida/South Georgia Creative Arts Showcase took place at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida. This event, part of the 2024 National Veterans Creative Arts Competition, showcased the talents of 23 veterans who submitted artwork, songs, creative writing, and multimedia videos. One of the highlights was a performance by The Veteran Project band, a group of creative veterans of all ages and service eras. Formed through the Music Skills Open Studio—an innovative clinic-to-community pipeline group supported in part by Creative Forces—they connected virtually and met in person for the first time to perform their original song, "The Veteran." This band exemplifies peer support, camaraderie, and dedication to both their country and their ongoing journey of healing through the arts. This weekend, SPARK! CREATIVE LAB, INC., a 2024 Mid-America Arts Alliance and NEA Creative Forces Community Engagement grantee will take the big stage at the Fort Smith International Film Festival. We're excited to see the story of United States Air Force Veteran Dr. Neil Chapman captivate audiences in Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Honored to share that *Ditty Bops | The Art of Listening,* a short documentary by SPARK! filmmaker (and international superstar) Zachary Burns, will be showcased at the Fort Smith International Film Festival! 🎥✨ Based on the story of #USAF Veteran Dr. Neil Chapman and our journey of bringing his remarkable story to the stage, this film stands as a powerful work of art in its own right, advocating for Veterans’ care and showcasing Burns’ incredibly storytelling. SPARK! Is committed to employing the arts for individual and social well-being, and through Ditty Bops, we aim to create a community of care centered around our Veterans, listening to, and amplifying, their voices and stories. With the support of our local #OKC community, and a prestigious grant from Creative Forces, we’re eagerly preparing to bring Ditty Bops back to the stage in OKC this winter! ⚡️ Join us at the Fort Smith International Film Festival and experience how art can be a catalyst for healing, connection, and advocacy. Over the past four months, Creative Forces Arts Therapist Gretchen Miller, MA, ATR-BC, has led a Meditative Art Series for VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System employees. This offering has provided more than 100 participants an opportunity to practice mindfulness, reduce stress, and prioritize self-care. Through techniques such as mindful doodling, these 30-minute sessions have offered a much-needed respite from the demands of their roles. As we approach National Relaxation Day tomorrow, we invite you to reflect on some of the images generated from these offerings and the importance of incorporating mindfulness and creativity into work routines.
