Helping future nurses take the next step in their careers! Nebraska Medicine is partnering with University of Nebraska Foundation and Reach for the Stars to offer a scholarship to our colleagues interested in pursuing a career in nursing. The Reach for the Stars Scholarship covers tuition and educational materials to pursue an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing at a public university/college in Nebraska or Iowa. Here are the five inaugural winners: • Jennifer Sommer, LPN, Neurosurgery Clinic at Nebraska Medical Center • Brianna Sadofsky, CNA, Neurosciences ICU, at Nebraska Medical Center • Clara Catlin, CNA, Progressive Care Unit at Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center • Molly Barnes, Apheresis support associate at Nebraska Medical Center • Atzin Avila Vazquez, CNA, Pre-Op/PACU at Nebraska Medical Center “The University of Nebraska Foundation came to us with this exciting opportunity available through Reach for the Stars,” says Sue Nuss, PhD, clinical workforce development officer. “We were thrilled to take part and provide an opportunity for our colleagues, who were already planning to attend nursing school, a way to have their tuition and fees paid.” Reach for the Stars is a scholarship program designed to help meet the demand for nurses. The scholarships are funded by anonymous donors in honor of family members who were nurses and to recognize nurses’ contributions to society. This is the first year Nebraska Medicine partnered with Reach for the Stars. “Advancing nursing education is core to who we are as a health system, and this opportunity is another way our staff can receive the support they need to accomplish their professional goals,” say Kelly Vaughn, chief nursing officer. Congratulations to our winners! #nursing #nurses #NebraskaMed #NebraskaMedicine #seriousmedicineextraordinarycare #TogetherExtraordinary

The Omaha Police Department and Omaha Fire Department do amazing things every day. And that includes visiting patients at Nebraska Medical Center! Members of the two departments are taking in part in Omaha Guns ‘N Hoses, a charity boxing event to benefit Bags of Fun Omaha. Bags of Fun surprises hospitalized patients and even their siblings with fantastic care packages to bring brightness to their time at the med center. The organization made a special delivery to one of our patients during this celebration with our community heroes! Thank you to everyone who brought smiles to these kids' faces! #communityheroes #bagsoffun #gunsnhosesomaha #NebraskaMed #NebraskaMedicine #seriousmedicineextraordinarycare

When the Lucquete family made it back home to Texas last month, the Christmas tree was still up in their house. It's been quite a 2024 already, with the whole family of six (plus pets!) staying in a trailer outside Nebraska Medical Center while 12-year-old Neely fought PTLD, a cancer that can impact transplant patients. The Lucquetes are now readjusting to life in Austin. "Neely received WORLD CLASS care at Nebraska Medical Center," says Kat Lucquete, Neely's mom. "Brilliant, compassionate, gifted, meticulous, patient, and thoughtful providers. You have the best of the best people there. After six months of being in the hospital, we certainly got to know each other and consider you all part of our family/Team Neely, like it or not. You saved her life, over and over. " While the Lucquetes are happy to be home, they miss Omaha already and hope to move closer in the future!

The process of direct heart donation, when the donor's family specifically names who the recipient will be, is incredibly rare. In fact, the procedure happened only twice in the entire country last year. One of those donations happened here at Nebraska Medical Center. NBC News anchor Kate Snow thought the story was so extraordinary, she recently visited the family in their hometown of Blair, NE to share it with viewers. The crew also came to the Nebraska Medical Center campus to speak with heart transplant surgeon John Um, MD, to get his perspective on how incredibly unique the entire process was. https://nbcnews.to/3yyLg5u
