November is Youth Homelessness Awareness Month! Youth who experience homelessness are at greater risk of adverse outcomes in adulthood, ranging from mental health struggles, experiences of exploitation, substance use disorders, and repeated experiences of housing instability later in life. In 2024, 85% of the adults with families experiencing homelessness were women. On Thursday, October 17th, we wear purple to honor survivors of domestic violence and intimate partner violence (DV/IPV). The women at New Endeavors come to us out of many overlapping difficulties: experiences of DV/IPV, addiction, health struggles, economic vulnerabilities, and more. Having a safe place to go can make all the difference in the success of an escape from DV/IPV, because without secure housing alternatives, many victims find themselves forced to return to their abusers. 40% of women who have experienced homelessness indicated that they lost their housing directly due to IPV. Join us today in raising awareness and share your own selfie wearing purple!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and here at NEW we are deeply aware that Domestic Violence or Intimate Partner Violence (DV/IPV) are all too often significant causes of women experiencing housing instability or being unhoused. Having a safe housing option available when leaving a DV/IPV situation is essential to survivors being able to successfully escape these dynamics and move on to healing. Nationally, 5% of all women needed emergency housing support at some point in their lives because of a DV/IPV situation, and 40% of women who have experienced homelessness indicated that the reason they lost housing was because of IPV When you support the women at NEW, you’re supporting survivors trying to make a fresh start.

Today, October 10th, is both World Homelessness Day & World Mental Health Day. Housing instability presents a significant challenge to mental health, and being unhoused is a major predictor of struggling with mental wellness. Being housing insecure during a mental health crisis can mean the difference between a difficult moment and an emergency. 67% of unhoused individuals are currently battling mental illness, and 77% report having experienced mental illness at any point in their lives. There are approximately 5,000 unhoused people in DC at any given time. Our unhoused neighbors are vulnerable in many ways, including mental illness. New Endeavors by Women’s dedication to our clients includes ensuring that all NEW women have access to free, one-on-one and group therapy sessions with a licensed therapist. Your support of NEW enables us to provide resources, stability, and sessions a therapist that together help build mental wellness and the space to dream about what can be. Please consider committing to a recurring monthly donation so we can continue this work in partnership with our clients. A gift of just $250 can cover the cost of a one-on-one therapy session for one client, sustaining mental wellness and reinforcing the skills and tools essential to maintain future stability.
