Rice University's redesigned Academic Quad recently opened to students and staff. In conjunction with Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, B&D Landscape Contractors and Rice University, we fabricated two trellises for the space that provide seating/studying areas for students. The structure of each trellis features ultra-square corners for an elevated feel. Check them out the next time you're on campus. We were thrilled to join Governor Kathy Hochul for the ribbon-cutting at the grand opening of the Frederic Church Center for Art and Landscape at Olana State Historic Site. This $18M project introduces a new gateway to Olana's 250-acre landscape, designed to enhance the visitor experience while championing sustainable, carbon-neutral practices. As the first building constructed at Olana since Frederic Church’s lifetime, it represents a key milestone in preserving and expanding this National Historic Landmark. The LA Group was proud to be part of the multi-disciplinary team responsible for the award-winning Strategic Landscape Design Plan, contributing to vital site improvements. Our work on the historic House Environs, which earned an ASLA award, revitalized the space around Church's residence while honoring its historical context. We also led the farm complex project, which included relocating a parking lot to safeguard historic viewsheds and integrating modern stormwater management systems. Congratulations to the entire team, including New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, The Olana Partnership, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, Architecture Research Office, and everyone involved in this exceptional public-private partnership. We are honored to have contributed to this effort, helping to position Olana as a premier destination for cultural tourism and environmental stewardship. #OlanaHistoricSite #FredericChurchCenter #LandscapeDesign #SustainableDesign #HistoricPreservation

“More than 24,000 new plants were installed around the quad, each carefully selected to feel at home in Houston: species like Echinacea purpurea, Salvia farinacea ‘Henry Duelberg,’ and Penstemon tenuis abound, echoing the school’s blue brand color. There are also 90 new trees on the quad, primed to provide shade as they mature. The vision is that students will one day see a contiguous canopy as they walk the curving pathways beneath the intertwined branches,” Emily Conklin writes in The Architect's Newspaper. Check out the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) video highlighting our visionary client, The Industrial Commons, and their project, Accelerating the Green Textile Economy in Southern Appalachia! The Industrial Commons’ 27-acre, multi-building Innovation Campus will play an integral role in their mission to serve as a regional manufacturing incubator, connecting entrepreneurs and brands in the region to circular textile supply chains. Project design by Mithun in collaboration with Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, PAE, Stantec, Fast + Epp, Baumgartner Urban Systems Strategy (BUSS), Biohabitats and Integrated Eco Strategy. Launched in 2022 following the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the ARC’s Appalachian Regional Initiative for Stronger Economies (ARISE) is a funding opportunity driving large-scale, regional economic transformation through multi-state collaborative projects. As a recipient of ARISE funding, The Industrial Commons will be able to expand its suite of training opportunities and services for textile entrepreneurs, companies and cooperatives, providing essential manufacturing space, training and support that will help more textile businesses thrive in the region. The NBW Design team celebrated the grand opening of our project, The Academic Quad at Rice University, earlier this month in Houston, Texas. The project reimagines the 4 acres to be a sought-after place of study, engagement, and recreation - rather than just a means of passage. To better align with the campus community’s modern-day needs and the university’s evolution, the design recontextualizes the Founder Statue from its central plinth and adds in curved walkways from student-created desire paths, shade-providing pavilions and tables, dynamic spaces for events and study, and high-speed Wi-Fi. Once fully grown in, the trees will provide ample amounts of shade and become a part of the university’s Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum, a collection of woody plants and named garden spaces dispersed throughout the campus.
