Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights, announced a settlement under HIPAA with a Maryland-based health care practice that was the subject of a ransomware cyber attack. The OCR investigation found violations of the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules leading to the breach of the electronic records of all of the practice's patients. The practice had failed to have in place a thorough risk analysis, failed to implement adequate security measures, and failed to sufficiently monitor its health information systems to protect against a cyber attack. Investigations and penalties in these types of cases are certain to become more frequent, and health care providers should take care to thoroughly assess their risks and vulnerabilities, as well as to make certain they have adequate safeguards in place to protect against cyber attacks. #hipaa #hipaacompliance #cybersecurity
