Does your community have an "alternative response team"? A growing number of emergency centers are sending trained health care professionals in place of law enforcement to assist with lower-risk situations (think wellness checks, confused individuals, and mental health-related calls). Robert Blaine, senior executive and director of the Center for Leadership, Education, Advancement and Development at the National League of Cities says this shift in mindset is an all-around good thing. Alternative response teams "can divert what could be a criminal justice-type response into more of a health care, trauma-informed [one that directs] more people into the appropriate care they need," and gives cities "a diverse set of tools" in their emergency response toolkit. On behalf of our members, NENA has filed official comments with the White House Office of Management & Budget advocating for 9-1-1 telecommunicators to be reclassified as "Protective Service Occupations" in the next version of the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. Currently, #911Professionals are wrongly categorized as clerical workers. We believe these life-saving professionals play a unique, critical role in public safety and face many of the same stressors as all first responders, and should be categorized accordingly. NENA Seeks Nominees to Serve as the Association's Western Region Director ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eE-faPj4 Due to a vacancy, applications are now being accepted for the Western Region Director seat on the NENA Board of Directors. The appointee will serve as Western Director for the remainder of the current two-year term, through June 2026. Each applicant for Western Director, at the time of their nomination and throughout their term(s) of service, must: ✅ Maintain membership, in good standing, in the Association; ✅ Maintain certification as an Emergency Number Professional in accordance with the prevailing requirements for that certification; ✅ Discharge, with all due diligence, the duties attendant upon the position they hold; ✅ Comply with all Association policies pertaining to activities of the Association in which they participate; and ✅ Reside within the Western Region. A distressed mother-to-be called 9-1-1 as she was experiencing sudden childbirth at home. "Every day our Telecommunicators are prepared and ready to answer the call, not knowing what it may be. That preparation was evident by Kaitlyn as soon as she took control of the call, brought calm in a time of chaos for the caller," said Paul McCallister, Assistant Director of Operations at the Nashville Department of Emergency Communications. A new Quapaw Nation Emergency Operation Center opened last week, thanks to a first-of-its-kind collaboration. The Quapaw Nation, the city of Miami, OK, and the Ottawa County 9-1-1 Authority worked together to provide emergency services from a more central location than before. The dispatch center is equipped with #NG911 technology, which means quicker response times, better geographic accuracy, and ultimately better service for the people it serves. "This is a momentous occasion because this is a shining example of what happens when our county, our city and our tribal nations come together for a common goal.
