Horizon Europe project addressing nutrient pollution by leveraging Nitrogen and Phosphorous recovery and recycling.
About us
In the context of ecosystems increasingly burdened by nutrient pollution, and fertiliser prices higher than ever, the recovery of Nitrogen and Phosphorous from waste streams provides a solution to tackle both issues, allowing the supply of new fertilisers (and other products for the food value chain) at a competitive price while enabling cleaner soil, air and water systems. However, to effectively do so, an intensive political, regulatory and governance effort is required to bring all key stakeholders on board. NENUPHAR was conceived to solve this need by developing new governance and value chain solutions addressing three waste streams widely present and the EU: manure, sewage sludges and dairy wastewaters, addressing four main innovations (i) a methodology for estimating N/P emissions from the application of a fertiliser on soil (ii) new governance models based on a network governance approach (iii) innovative economic and financial incentives for public and private entities; (iv) enabling technologies to treat manure, sludges and dairy wastewaters to recover the nutrient loads. Over the next three years, NENUPHAR's multi-stakeholder approach will bring together 21 entities representing farmers and irrigators, waste managers, research experts in circularity and agronomics, social science experts, environmental organisations and public administrations.

Exciting news! The NENUPHAR project will be present at both the 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 and the 𝟭𝟳𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, taking place today and tomorrow in Valladolid, Spain 🤝 Our colleague Alejandro Fresneda will present during the session "Uses of Digestate," showcasing how CIRCE - Technology Centre, through projects like NenuPhar_EU, is advancing developments and demonstrations for nutrient recovery in digestates and other organic waste. These efforts aim to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions in nitrate-polluted vulnerable zones, such as the Ebro Basin, where one of our project demo cases is currently in progress! 🗣️ 👉 https://lnkd.in/dbREnRE4 #Sustainability #Bioenergy #RenewableGas #CircularEconomy #Innovation

And that's a wrap! 🎉 Thanks to everyone who attended this year's European Sustainable Nutrients Initiative Conference #ESNI2024! ♻ It was promising to see such a diversity of stakeholders engaging with one another around the common goal of tackling #NutrientPollution! 𝗧𝗢-𝗗𝗢𝘀 So what have we learned? We must: 💧properly implement and enforce existing regulations to protect water! 💧integrate relevant voices, stakeholders and expertise systematically 💧strengthen capacity building (trainings, etc.) and knowledge exchange platforms 💧apply methodologies consistently across models 💧ensure that data and information is easily accessible 💧establish integrated platforms, comparative studies and guidelines 💧be consistent with our messaging and reinforce collective communications! #ESNI2024 Day 2 is well underway! 🗣⚠🔄 Great to see so many others joining us in Brussels to discuss the solutions to Europe's growing #NutrientPollution crisis. Some takeaways so far today: 𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗧 💶 It's often said that mineral fertilisers are cheaper than bio-based fertilisers (BBFs) but costs can vary depending on the BBF... For instance, ammonia stripping recovered from manure is currently less expensive to produce - and does not include externalities such as: 🔺environmental costs to clean up diffuse pollution 🔺direct and indirect health costs 🔺water shortage due to pollution 🔺biodiversity loss It also shows that the #PolluterPaysPrinciple is not properly implemented, otherwise using mineral fertilisers would cost much more... 𝗚𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 📄 Legislation and policies for nutrient recovery are lacking. So what are some of the barriers to wider integration and replication of common governance models? We currently have inadequate: ➡ transversal cooperation and the lack of a common language hinders scientific-based policy making ➡ capacity building (trainings, etc.) and knowledge exchange platforms ➡ methodologies applied consistently across models ➡ data and information that is easily accessible ➡ integrated platforms, comparative studies and guidelines Want to be part of the NenuPhar_EU project's growing #CommunityOfInterest?
