The Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) onboard NOAA's GOES-19 satellite has started sending back imagery of the sun! On Oct. 3, it even caught a powerful X9 flare, which can affect radio communications, navigation systems, satellites, and more. I am excited to share with my colleagues the announcement of a leadership role opening at my home organization – the National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS). We are recruiting for a new lead The Senior Executive Service (SES) selection will be the new International Director, Office of International and Interagency Relations and Data Partnership (OIIRDP) (sorry about the acronym). Go to the announcement on USAJobs announcement for the many details on the position. The announcement will be open until November 14, 2024. If you do apply, please read the details very carefully, I hate to see good candidates’ applications lost because they forgot to include some simple detail (like a college transcript, ECQs, etc.). You must be a US citizen or a national to apply. I am looking forward to having this person as my partner as we continue to expand the NESDIS network of national and global earth observations partnerships focused on bringing more and better weather and climate information products and services to our communities. The Director will coordinate policies guiding bi-lateral and multilateral formal and informal agreements concerning international satellite management, will recommend U.S. positions with respect to participation and contribution to international remote sensing activities. NESDIS has many productive bi-lateral relationships with international earth observing satellite agencies, some established within the past couple of years and others that have been maintained for many decades. We are a space agency partner focused on long term delivery of essential information, and forming partnerships that serve both our own nation’s needs and our partners’ needs. I believe we are one of the most innovative civil space agencies on the planet when it comes to finding productive ways to meet mission objectives, working with experienced and start-up agencies, with small and large commercial companies providing satellite hardware and observations. Please take a look at the job announcement and apply, or share the link with friends.

As more data products from NCEI come back online, we are able to release an abbreviated version of the September 2024 U.S. and Global climate reports. Both full reports will be available tomorrow as NCEI returns to full operations, but for now, we are able to publish some climate and weather highlights from September 2024 from the U.S. and the Globe: 🌎 September 2024 was the second-warmest September on record for the U.S. and the Globe. 🥵 The year-to-date global temperature was the warmest such period on record, with North America, South America, Europe, and Africa each ranking first. 🌡️ Year-to-date temperatures across the contiguous U.S. averaged second warmest on record. 🌀 Hurricane Helene was the strongest hurricane on record to strike the Big Bend region of Florida, the deadliest Atlantic hurricane since Maria (2017), and the deadliest to strike the U.S. mainland since Katrina (2005). 💵 Three new hurricanes (Debby, Helene, and Milton) and one tornado outbreak were added to the 2024 Billion Dollar Weather and Climate Disaster total. The year-to-date total now stands at 24 events—the second-highest event total for this period. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e-6D8DQt
