🚀 Yesterday was the first meeting of the Cities Mission Mayors Advisory Group in Brussels! The Cities Mission Mayors Advisory Group serves as a vital, dynamic, and multifaceted forum for #MissionCities, the Mission Platform managed by NetZeroCitiesEU, and the European Commission to collaborate and advance the Mission-related priorities. Some of the key points discussed in the meeting include: ✅ The need for a strong political voice within the Cities Mission, to be provided by the Advisory Group. ✅ The importance of collaboration with national governments, with the Cities Mission as a key way to engage. ✅ The critical role of the private sector in the green transition. ✅ The necessity of tackling financial barriers and streamlining access to funding. ✅ And various challenges from social equity to biodiversity protection, including economic development and more. 🎉Congratulations to the new 20 #MissionCities awarded the EU Mission Label! We are thrilled to announce that 20 cities – Aachen, Münster (Germany), Trikala (Greece), Miskolc (Hungary), Eilat (Israel), Bologna, Bergamo, Milan, Prato, Turin (Italy), Liepāja (Latvia), The Hague (the Netherlands), Porto (Portugal), Bucharest 2nd District, Suceava (Romania), Ljubljana, Kranj (Slovenia), Gothenburg, Gävle, Umeå (Sweden) – have been awarded the EU Mission Label as part of the EU Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities! 👏 This award recognises their ambitious plans to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, facilitating access to public and private funding that will help bring their plans to life. The labelled cities will receive support from the Climate City Capital Hub, and are eligible for a €2 billion lending envelope from the European Investment Bank to accelerate their climate action. With this announcement, the total number of cities awarded the label has now reached 53. The awardee cities will receive their Mission Label by Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, during a ceremony on 22 October at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. 📌 This week, the 10th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns took place in Aalborg, Denmark and EU Cities Mission & NetZeroCitiesEU representatives were there to share valuable insights at several sessions and engage with participants at our booth! 💡 “Climate City Contract (CCC) Investment Plans: Financing a Greener Tomorrow” explored innovative ways to support city-level climate action, particularly through CCCs as tools to identify funding gaps and needs in cities. Speakers included Agnes Schönfelder, Climate Policy Advisor EU Mission 100 CNSC and EU Green Deal, Stadt Mannheim and Maria Granlund, Climate Specialist, Transition and Climate Policy Unit, Turun kaupunki - Åbo stad - City of Turku, Tommaso Buso, Associate, BwB (Capital Hub), Ovidiu CIMPEAN, State Secretary in the Ministry of Investments and European Projects, Romanian Cities National Platform M100 HUB, and Wojciech Deska, Senior Urban Specialist, European Investment Bank (EIB). 💡 “Local, Regional, and National Governments Together for Climate-Neutral Cities” focused on collaborative efforts across government levels to achieve climate neutrality. Experts and practitioners are testing an innovative multilevel governance approach through national platforms. These platforms aim to improve coordination and collaboration, not just between local, regional, and national governments, but also with key players like the private sector, academia, and civil society. 📣 Exciting news! NetZeroCitiesEU and CIVITAS Initiative have signed a partnership agreement (an MoU) that illustrates how both initiatives will collaborate to strengthen support for cities to develop sustainable mobility initiatives as they journey towards climate neutrality. Thomas Haddock, NetZeroCities Head of Operations, Climate-KIC cycled over 300km to the CIVITAS Forum, where he and Andreas G. Piller, CIVITAS coordinator signed the MoU! ''Together, we are committed to fostering collaboration and facilitating the exchange of knowledge across our networks, empowering cities and communities on their paths to climate neutrality.'' - Thomas Haddock With transport accounting for 25% of the EU’s overall emissions, this this partnership is crucial for the many European cities working tirelessly to reduce emissions, improve citizens' health and wellbeing, ensure safer urban mobility, and achieve their climate goals.
