“Recent research published in the Annals of Family Medicine raises concerns about the effectiveness of depression and anxiety screenings in physician offices. The study, supported by the AMA’s Electronic Health Record Use Research Grant Program, reveals that widely-used screening tools like the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2 (GAD-2) identified depression and anxiety risks in less than 60% of newly diagnosed patients. This inefficiency may contribute to physician burnout and detract from patient care. The study suggests rethinking the frequency and methods of screenings, like avoiding repetitive intake questions and exploring self-administered methods.
