How do you think the decline of local pubs is reshaping our social connections? With 50 pubs closing every month in the UK, we’re losing more than just places to drink—we’re losing key community spaces. How can we reimagine pubs to preserve their role as social anchors? On 18th October, First Hand Collective—comprised of Kevin Haley Studio , Hannah Drakeford , Simon Hamilton , and Julio Alejandro Calanche González —will host a hands-on workshop in Wandsworth. Together with 20 participants, we’ll design and build a pop-up pub inside the New Acres development, celebrating Wandsworth’s pub heritage while providing participants with valuable skills to grow their design careers. The pub will be more than just a build. It will serve as a platform for a series of events, exploring the future of pubs. We would love to collaborate with key voices, including breweries such as Sambrook's Brewery , Beavertown Brewery , Camden Town Brewery , Fuller's Brewery , Greene King , Meantime Brewing Company and other leaders who are passionate about pubs and the role they play in communities. Together, we can help ensure the legacy of these beloved social spaces. Interested? Let’s connect and explore how you can support the next generation of designers while contributing to a community-driven project focused on the future of pubs. Drop me a DM and let’s chat about how we can work together to preserve these essential social spaces. FOUNDRY Wandsworth opened its doors today at New Acres. It marks the first major commercial opening and is a significant milestone in this project with the final residential just weeks away from handover. Co-working is a fantastic medium for building community and creating a successful commercial ecosystem; it will be integral to the success of the wider scheme and it couldn’t be in better hands than FOUNDRY's. A huge thanks to everyone involved in this project, it's by far the best one yet and each and every party involved has outdone themselves! In particular a shout out to Adam Walker, and the FOUNDRY team, Garry James, Hannah Mojica, Beth PickardPamela D'Alessandro, and the Interaction team , Sam Perry, Georgia Salter-Randall, Ben Woodgate; the project managers 2110, Richard Taylor, Jas Bharj; and the home team, Denz Ibrahim, Alex Sangway, Nisha Kerai MRICS and Dan Batterton.

“In a world that is constantly under construction, we can only dream of bringing everything to rest. But in the meantime, we must learn to go along with things, allowing them to unfold under our care, not force them into submission.” — Tim Ingold As my residency time at super Satellite hosted by Royal College of Art at New Acres Development and my group exhibition at the NEX Wandsworth comes to an end, I'm proud to introduce 'Practice of Care' - a platform where my research and creative works approaching to built-environment discards will continue to develop. This series of ‘Practice of Care’ aims to reflect on the subtle yet profound relationships between humans and the materials we engage with. It is an inquiry into how we can foster a deeper respect for the matter that constructs our built environment, seeking unexpected beauty and serendipity in their new life. - Special Thanks to the programme, our curator Kevin Haley and all artists in residence - Ella N., Phoebe Mendel,Alexandra Ellerkamp,Naixin Shi

Community moments from the wasteCOLLECTION exhibition private view at superSATELLITE in The NEX! Over the past six months, RCA alumni have been exploring sustainable design possibilities, transforming construction waste from the New Acres development into stunning installations, objects, and artworks. It was inspiring to see new life given to overlooked materials, challenging traditional perceptions of waste. Wonderfully curated by Kevin Haley the exhibition was full of inspiration. From beautiful candle holders to striking coffee tables, the works on display showcased innovative material techniques that encourage more sustainable and circular design practices. The evening was a true celebration, bringing Wandsworth’s creative community to life in superSATELLITE and we are so excited for more evenings like this to come! The exhibition is open to the public for the whole of September so why not pop down and be inspired or bring a friend make a day of it and stop for a coffee and light bite 404 cafe. You might be familiar with Pilates, but have you ever tried it on a rooftop pool? We’re taking it to the next level in Wandsworth—literally! Inspired by its rising popularity in Australia and Dubai, for the first time in the UK, you can experience pool top Pilates right here. This week, we hosted our first session and it was a fantastic morning! The class was led by @CLMpilates and combined guided breathwork with a series of controlled exercises designed to challenge your core strength while the water around you enhances your mindfulness. For the next three Saturday's we are hosting public sessions and can't wait to see more people give it a go. Due to popular demand, the the public tickets are completely sold out but there are still a few resident tickets available to purchase when the code is applied at checkout. See you on the water! https://lnkd.in/eYGdWm6F

Unlocking the Potential of Urban Spaces: A New Chapter in Community and Creativity at New Acres What if the spaces we inhabit could do more than just house us—what if they could inspire, connect, and transform our communities? Last Friday, we witnessed a glimpse of this potential at the opening of the wasteCOLLECTION residency at the NEX, the dynamic heart of the New Acres development in London. New Acres is not just another residential project; it’s a bold experiment in rethinking urban living. With 1,000 new homes and 25 commercial units, this development is designed to blend living, working, and commercial spaces in a way that fosters true community interaction. On the ground floor, the NEX brings together a coffee shop run by 404, a coworking facility managed by FOUNDRY, and the super SATELLITE space, operated by the Royal College of Art (RCA). The super SATELLITE isn’t just a gallery or a studio; it’s a living lab for creativity. Here, RCA alumni have been transforming material waste from the surrounding towers into a variety of objects, installations, and sculptures. A big thank you to Studio Imogen Jo (Phoebe Mendel & Alexandra Ellerkamp), Naixin Shi, Ella N., and Nicharee Leelathipkul for their amazing work that transformed the waste from New Acres into wonder. This innovative approach not only reduces waste but also reimagines how we use resources in urban development. The opening event was a resounding success, with over 90 attendees engaging with the work, discussing sustainability, and celebrating the power of creative reuse. But this is just the beginning. The question we’re exploring now is: How can spaces like the super SATELLITE drive deeper cultural activation within our urban developments? How can we make these spaces more than just amenities—how can they become integral to the fabric of the community, where creativity and culture are not just added bonuses, but central to the living experience? The success of the wasteCOLLECTION residency highlights the appetite for cultural and creative spaces within urban developments. With Wandsworth set to be a Borough of Culture next year, there’s a tremendous opportunity to expand this model. Imagine a future where every new development integrates spaces that foster public creativity, where architecture and design aren’t just about buildings, but about building communities. The NEX at New Acres is a step in this direction, but there’s so much more potential to unlock. By continuing to explore and invest in these mixed-use spaces, we can create vibrant, intelligent urban environments that offer something for everyone—residents, artists, designers, and the wider community. The exhibition is open to the public and will run from 30.08.24 until 02.10.24, Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5pm, and Saturday to Sunday from 9am to 2pm. Moving to a new place comes with a number of new challenges, finding authentic and relatable community being one of them. We caught up with local legend Andy who has been championing the sporting community in Wandsworth for almost half a century! When Andy moved to Wandsworth, he found a home in Wandsworth Borough FC. Beginning as a player in 1976 then becoming chairman in 1986, he has been an integral part of the team ever since. Celebrated for its family ethos, Wandsworth Borough FC has had a vast impact on the lives of the many players within the community. With regular training sessions and games, the team environment is perfect for meeting people and forming new relationships with like minded friends. We spoke with members of the mens and womens team to hear about the impact that this community has had on their life and the impact was clear, with players citing the source of ‘joy’ the team has been, having ‘saved them’ in tough times as members rallied in support of each other, united by a love of football. If you are looking for a local sporting community with a welcoming atmosphere, why not give it a go. With a few members of the New Acres community already playing you might just meet your new neighbour! ⚽️
