Thanks for pointing this out Shalin. NSF has always and will continue to invest in early careers and fundamental discoveries pioneered by our amazing researchers. We are proud to have invested in 265 Nobel Laureates so far (early and sustained investments through their careers)

🏆The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Physics to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton "for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks." 💸But did you know? National Science Foundation (NSF) made an initial award to Hinton in 1989, during the #AI winter, when nobody was investing in AI. Nobody believing in AI. It helped create the foundation for today's AI revolution. As David Brooks outlined in The New York Times just this morning, that's the case for innovation-centered industrial policy as per the #CHIPSAct, especially the "science" part of the act. Earlier this year, Sethuraman Panchanathan made the case for sustained investment in NSF during a conversation hosted by New America's Future of Work & Innovation Economy Initiative on NSF Engines - one of the broadest innovation-based industrial policy levers in the modern era.
