A warm welcome to our newest Americans! Yesterday, as part of broader efforts to encourage civic participation among newly naturalized citizens, 40 newcomers were sworn in as new U.S. citizens in Passaic County, just days before the voter registration deadline. The ceremony highlighted the significance of citizenship and civic engagement, with officials – including keynote speaker and NJCDC founder & CEO Bob Guarasci – emphasizing the importance of participating in elections. Our leader called citizenship “the greatest gift this country can offer” and urged the new Americans to get involved in the towns where they live, quoting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who said, “everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.”

What a special day yesterday was. We are so honored to have been part of it.
I think we all have days that stand out among the others. Today was one for me, as I was asked to address the group of 40 New Americans taking their oaths as citizens at Paterson's Great Falls National Park. Many thanks to Superintendent Darren Boch for the invitation. I reminded today's group how fortunate they are to become New Americans, when so many in this world who face conditions of war and poverty and intolerance yearn to be in their shoes today. It was a wonderful and moving experience.

We believe that people should feel welcomed when they enter our rejuvenated neighborhood. That’s why we’re transforming the gateway to the Great Falls from a vacant “go-go bar” — long the target of complaints — to affordable housing and likely a restaurant. “When I look at this project,” said our founder and CEO Bob Guarasci, “I see an opportunity to rid the neighborhood of a problem property that has long diminished everyone’s quality of life and to replace it with much needed affordable housing and retail space.”

Beautifying. Cleaning. Landscaping. Gardening. This is how we honor, each year on September 11, the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the bravery of so many. With our partners, AmeriCorps Paterson and AvalonBay Communities, we remembered and paid tribute to those lives by coming together as a community for a day of service. Focused on revitalizing key areas of the city, their efforts made a lasting impact at the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park and raceways, NJCDC affordable/supportive housing units, and our Rosario Coscia Children’s Garden. Thank you for your service! National Park Service Read all about it on our blog: https://bit.ly/3Bdfzjk
