#NYP was proud to present The Art of Healing, a live #HealthMatters podcast event and art therapy workshop, for #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth. The event featured a live recording of #HealthMatters with artist and multicancer survivor Kiley Durham, who shared the moving story of her cancer journey and the important role that art played in her healing. Two members of her #NYPWeillCornell care team, medical oncologist Dr. Tessa Cigler and radiation oncologist Dr. John Ng, joined her on stage to discuss the meaningful connections they form with patients and how those relationships inform their approach to cancer care. Attendees experienced the therapeutic power of art in a hands-on art workshop, designed to foster community and creativity. We are thrilled to announce that NewYork-Presbyterian won two Emmy Awards, for best Commercial and best Editor, Short Form Content, at the 67th annual New York Emmy Awards. Produced by #NYP’s marketing team in partnership with Havas, the winning commercial features Jack Foley, a boy born with a rare, congenital heart defect who underwent three surgeries to re-engineer how his heart pumps and is now an avid hockey player. Additionally, in the Editor, Short Form Content category, #NYP won for a video produced by our editorial and creative team that tells the story of two babies, Mia Skaats and Brooklyn Civil, who were part of an innovative domino transplant performed at #NYPMorganStanley. Mia received a heart transplant and, in turn, donated her healthy valves to Brooklyn, saving both babies. “It is an incredible honor for us to be able to tell the stories of our amazing patients and the care teams and frontline workers that take care of them,” #NYP Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Devika Mathrani said in accepting the award. An integrated group of engineers and clinicians at #NYPColumbia have developed a robotic device that potentially could augment exercise therapy for stroke patients with hemiparesis, the loss of motor control on one side of the body. The mobile Tethered Pelvic Assist Device (mTPAD), demonstrated below by a staff member, applies 3D external forces on the pelvis that are synchronized with a patient’s gait. It helps normalize weight shifting and trunk control so that patients will use the weak side of their body. Results from a feasibility study show promising and immediate improvements. In April, Krista Figari, 39, woke up early one morning and quickly became disoriented. She stumbled to the floor, having lost control of her left side. Krista was having a wake-up stroke, a type of #stroke that occurs during sleep. She called 911 and was rushed to #NYPWeillCornell, where her care team, led by vascular neurologist Dr. Nicholas Janocko, treated her with tenecteplase (TNK), a medicine used to dissolve blood clots. Five days later, Krista was discharged, having recovered with only slight weakness in her left hand and mild drooping in her face – symptoms that Krista says are undetectable today. Tests revealed that her stroke was caused by a patent foramen ovale (PFO), a small hole in her heart. To reduce her risk of a future stroke, Krista returned to the hospital in July for a minimally invasive procedure to close the hole, performed by interventional cardiologist Dr. Harsimran Singh, and was home the next day. Though it had been several hours since the stroke began, Dr. Janocko explained, “we gave her TNK because the results of her imaging showed her stroke was still very recent and she’d benefit from it. Thankfully, she had a really good outcome.” Krista, a special education teacher, is now back at work at P.S. 205 in the Bronx, happily making a difference in her students’ lives. “I’m very grateful for everything all the doctors and nurses did for me, from the ER to the neurology and cardiology teams,” she said. “If it wasn’t for them, I’m not sure where I’d be physically or mentally today. I feel very lucky!” Learn more about wake-up strokes and how they’re treated: https://nyphosp.co/3UtTZ0u Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine
