Three years after receiving a gene-editing therapy as part of a clinical trial for sickle cell disease at #NYPMorganStanley, 16-year-old Jonathan Lubin returned to the hospital full of gratitude and with a big surprise for one of his care team members, #NYP pediatric nurse practitioner Maureen Licursi. Maureen was overjoyed to see Jonathan and wiped away tears as the family expressed heartfelt thanks for being his “guardian angel” since he was a baby. Born with sickle cell disease, Jonathan suffered from excruciating pain crises, and Maureen supported him and his family throughout his journey. He has not experienced a pain crisis in nearly three years. “I’m very proud of you,” Maureen told Jonathan as they hugged. #NYP heart patient Yasin Samad, 9, proudly invited his pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Maria Thanjan of #NYPQueens, to his school classroom to explain his heart condition and spread awareness about congenital heart diseases. Yasin was born with a congenital condition called tetralogy of Fallot and needed two open-heart surgeries before he turned 2. Last year, when he and his family learned he needed a new heart valve, they decided to participate in a clinical trial at #NYPMorganStanley for a valve that can be expanded via a minimally invasive procedure as he grows. During the class visit, Dr. Thanjan explained that Yasin is a “heart pioneer” who is paving the way for other children with the condition. She also taught them how to listen to their own hearts using a stethoscope. This #WorldHeartDay, join us in celebrating Yasin, and all heart patients, for their strength and resilience by dropping a ❤️ in the comments.
