From New York to the #DominicanRepublic and beyond, #NYPMorganStanley pediatric transplant hepatologist Dr. Mercedes Martinez is helping to bring lifesaving care to patients with end-stage liver disease. Dr. Martinez provides free educational and clinical support to liver transplant programs in underserved areas of Latin America and the Caribbean, traveling to the Dominican Republic on weekends for transplant surgeries. “I’m proud to be part of a culture of giving back,” Dr. Martinez says, who grew up in a rural area of Cuba that lacked access to high-quality medical care. “As a healthcare worker, it’s about helping wherever you can. A little bit of effort can save a lot of lives.” This #HispanicHeritageMonth, click the link to learn more about her story: https://nyphosp.co/3zMl1JE Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine

#NYP patient Kiley Durham was treated to a day to remember at a recent New York Mets game in honor of her remarkable resilience through a long, complex cancer journey. Kiley was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 and later developed a brain tumor and cancer in her spinal fluid; her condition was considered terminal. But her care team never gave up, and Kiley is now cancer-free. At Citi Field, Kiley and her family had a wonderful time meeting the players and watching batting practice before enjoying the game. Thank you to the Mets for celebrating Kiley’s extraordinary strength and giving her family a special experience at the ballpark. Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine

Three years after receiving a gene-editing therapy as part of a clinical trial for sickle cell disease at #NYPMorganStanley, 16-year-old Jonathan Lubin returned to the hospital full of gratitude and with a big surprise for one of his care team members, #NYP pediatric nurse practitioner Maureen Licursi. Maureen was overjoyed to see Jonathan and wiped away tears as the family expressed heartfelt thanks for being his “guardian angel” since he was a baby. Born with sickle cell disease, Jonathan suffered from excruciating pain crises, and Maureen supported him and his family throughout his journey. He has not experienced a pain crisis in nearly three years. “I’m very proud of you,” Maureen told Jonathan as they hugged.
