  • At Newark Youth Career Pathways, it is our goal that every senior graduate enrolled in a "Next Step" as they create their five year post secondary plan with us. Whether college, trade school, fellowship, internship, program or job, we are committed to supporting their enrollment in the appropriate next step post graduation that is right for them and their career interests. And, while college is a Next Step we introduce to ALL, we celebrate them all the same. The truth is: If we call it a Next Step, it makes us continue responsibility to support each young person after graduation. Increasing our chances to get them to college at some point. Next Step forces us to stay on our game, and learn about all of the amazing and meaningful opportunities that we can introduce them to. If we focus on Next Steps, we celebrate and therefore find value, in all post secondary options. No student is left behind when it comes to preparing them to succeed. College IS for everyone. But College is a milestone on the Pathway to success, not the final destination. Even if College is the Next Step, there are many others to achieve most goals. If high school didn't inspire them or give them career clarity. maybe their Next Step will. You can become just as successful without a degree if your career path requires something different. Some young people need a little more time to choose the career and major that is right for them. And that's OK. If we stay with them, we can BE there when THEY are ready. Life after high school is a journey, and every journey is different. It's time to change the way we prepare students for their adult life. The post secondary transition is too important to not evolve. And our role as educators and life preparers is too important not to evolve with it. We are grateful for pathway partners who make this heart work possible. ##postsecondary #nextstep #collegeandcareerprep #whatsbestforourchildren #changethenarrative #collectiveimpact

  • Thank you Malcolm Thorpe, Esq. for your time and wisdom!

Building opportunities for students can look a lot of different ways. Sometimes it's helping secure funding for schools and community resources. Other times, it’s connecting directly with the students and sharing our professional paths. MS&B attorney, Malcolm Thorpe, Esq. recently did just that at a Newark Youth Career Pathways panel. Along with other accomplished professionals, including Darryl Scipio, Esq., Alturrick Kenney, Josephine Garcia, Ashley Davis, and the Honorable Masiel Valentin, he shared his professional journey and some of the insights he gained along the way with a group of bright young students.
