There’s no doubt that the #collegeathletics landscape is changing rapidly. From #NIL, endorsements, and coming April 7th, athlete revenue-sharing, athletic departments are faced with a number of legal questions, and potential risks as uncertainty grows over how to operate in this new world. The only certainty is that uncertainty fuels sharp increases in legal and business disputes. Attending the New York State Bar Association's Annual Meeting was one of our January highlights. Our co-founder and GC, Shane William Mulrooney, participated in a distinguished panel that discussed "Tech Tango in ADR."

We are excited to kick off the New Year with a great overview from our CEO and co-founder, Rich Lee, on the abundant legal challenges that e-commerce leaders will face in 2025. The column was published in Total Retail this week. In short:   🎯 Every company is now a data company. If you collect info on customers, vendors, and partners, you are subject to a host of laws and regulations regarding data privacy.   🎯 Legislation hasn’t kept up with business technology, leaving companies subject to antiquated laws like the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) that are as outdated as a rotary phone and fax machine.   🎯 IP, tax, and compliance related to remote workers are other critical issues top-of-mind of e-commerce retailers.    🎯 The future is bright for e-commerce! We continue to be grateful for friends and colleagues who broaden our perspective on litigation, and David Carter is no exception. We had the opportunity to co-author a column with him for the Association of Corporate Counsel’s ACC Docket publication, discussing the evolving role of the #GeneralCounsel.   “Long ago, chief legal officers started to expand from their initial duties of simply steering internal clients away from legal trouble,” David and our CEO and Co-Founder Rich Lee wrote in a column published this month. “Modern CLOs and their deputies embed themselves into business units to help turn ideas into market realities. However, digital technology is accelerating this transformation because every company has become a part of the data economy.
