About us

For 137 years, the ships built at Newport News Shipbuilding, like the American shipbuilders who built them, have served our nation in peace and war, in times of adversity and in times of abundance. Our legacy of “Always Good Ships,” includes the design, construction, overhaul and repair of more than 800 ships for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. Today, Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear- powered submarines. We also provide fleet services for naval ships. We are the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people, many of whom are third- and fourth-generation shipbuilders.

Enterprise (#CVN80) Ship’s Sponsors Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky are preparing to compete for gold in Paris with Team USA. Take a look at this special message to our ship’s sponsors from a few of the shipbuilders working to bring the US Navy aircraft carrier to life at Newport News Shipbuilding. Good luck to Simone, Katie and the rest of the American athletes from all of us at NNS!

I had an opportunity today to spend some time with Newport News Shipbuilding’s summer interns. Their enthusiasm, fresh perspectives and innovative ideas are inspiring. As we continue to modernize and transform our business, we look forward to putting their thoughts and ideas to work. I’m grateful these students chose to spend their summer with us and wish them the best in the upcoming school year. Hopefully this summer internship is a step toward a fulfilling career in shipbuilding!

Take a look at this time-lapse video to see Newport News shipbuilders rig and install a 200,000-pound generator on US Navy aircraft carrier Enterprise (#CVN80). Like all Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers, CVN 80 will be equipped with four emergency generators that provide backup power. Thank you to all of the shipbuilders involved in this process!

  • We are proud to share that we have completed contracted work at the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, part of the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (FMP), in West Milton, New York. NNS provided maintenance services and led the refueling overhaul of a nuclear reactor prototype at the Kesselring site, a research and development facility that supports the U.S. Navy's Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. Newport News Shipbuilding has completed refueling overhaul work at the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site – part of the Naval Nuclear Laboratory – in West Milton, New York. NNS assumed responsibility for maintenance on nuclear reactor prototypes at the facility in 2012. Since then, thousands of shipbuilders have supported this critical work, both in Newport News and in New York. The work of Kesselring shipbuilders furthered NNS’ already proud legacy of supporting the US Navy’s Nuclear Propulsion Program. With the completion of our commitments at Kesselring, the facility is positioned to train U.S. Navy nuclear operators for years to come. Thank you to every shipbuilder who has supported this important work through the years. I invite you to watch this message from Mary Cullen, NNS’ vice president of Nuclear Propulsion.

  • We welcomed Rep. Bobby Scott, Rep. Rob Wittman and a delegation of Australian Parliamentarians to the shipyard on Friday. The visit was in support of the trilateral Australia, United Kingdom and United States (#AUKUS) partnership, which HII continues to support. While at NNS, the delegation engaged with our team to learn more about HII’s nuclear-powered submarine sustainment expertise, supply chain management experience and longstanding industry-leading workforce development efforts. Newport News Shipbuilding is accepting employee submissions for the 2024 Safety Song Contest from Monday, July 15, until Friday, Aug. 2. This is a fun opportunity for shipbuilders to show off their musical talent while highlighting the importance of safety in the shipyard and beyond. For some inspiration, here’s a #throwback to the music video for “I Wanna Be Safe” by Derek Wilson, who won our 2014 Safety Song Contest.   I look forward to seeing what our shipbuilders create this time around!   Contest rules and submission guidelines are here: https://lnkd.in/eBzyagR3

  • We are pleased to be working with the US Navy on this exciting addition to our shipyard. Once complete, the new Carrier Refueling Overhaul Workcenter will enhance the working experience for both sailors and shipbuilders by providing modern workspaces, which will allow some work to move off the ship.

The US Navy and #NAVSEA remains committed to quality-of-service improvements for our sailors and shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding. Today, NAVSEA announces a contract modification for the planning, design, and construction of the Carrier Refueling Overhaul Workcenter for sailors’ and shipbuilders’ use while assigned to ships in Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII (HII-NNS). The building will provide approximately 80,000 square feet of dedicated space near the ship that will include office spaces for sailors and shipbuilders, as well as a fitness center, counseling offices, and other areas sailors can utilize while executing RCOH. Construction is planned to complete in June 2026. The news to establish a dedicated work center for RCOH sailors follows last month's announcement that a new parking garage with more than 2,000 new parking spaces will be constructed in Newport News to help alleviate parking challenges. The Navy continues to work in close partnership with HII-NNS and governmental partners to advance initiatives to support service members assigned to the shipyard. #theforcebehindthefleet #AircraftCarriers #Warfighter #QualityofService #WarfighterSupport #foundation

As we prepare to celebrate the Independence Day holiday, I invite you to watch this moving guitar performance of the national anthem by one of our own – NNS firefighter and Apprentice School graduate William Davis IV. We filmed him in our shipyard as a symbolic reminder that shipbuilding is more than a job. It’s an honorable and noble calling that directly supports the freedoms we hold so dear. Thank you for keeping our Navy safe and our nation free. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July!

Newport News shipbuilders are known for building and overhauling US Navy aircraft carriers and submarines. But did you know they also rescue animals? NNS manages a large population of cats along the waterfront. On two recent occasions, shipbuilders – and their ingenuity – came together to save stranded kittens found in our shipyard. Please join me in thanking the shipbuilders involved for the care they showed in rescuing these shipyard cats! Several of the kittens are in the process of being adopted.
