Tours depart at the top of every hour for the duration of the event.  Please route your travel via Hoyt Lakes and along Kensington Drive from the south. Access from Hwy 135 is restricted. This past week we moved a portable crushing plant onsite to turn the 70,000 tons of concrete we’ve removed from the concentrator into something useful. Did you know that crushed concrete makes a great substitute for conventional aggregate? The plant can crush up to 3,000 tons of concrete a day! We plan to put the crushed concrete to beneficial use around the NorthMet site, eliminating the need for it to go to a landfill. This is all part of our massive salvage and recycle project at the former LTV Steel concentrator, where we’ve removed and recycled thousands of tons of steel and concrete since June of 2023. We plan to wrap up the concentrator work later this year.

Much like Alli and her love of the environment and fishing, we at NewRange have a love for the environment and are committed to protecting it and the numerous recreational opportunities we enjoy in Northern Minnesota. Our president and general manager, Tannice McCoy, spoke at National Clean Energy Week where she discussed rural America’s role in the clean energy economy. She shared that St. Louis County, here in northeastern Minnesota, has mined ore for over 140 years, and now through NewRange the region can strengthen America’s energy security and meaningfully support the United States' clean energy transition by creating a domestic supply chain of multiple critical minerals like copper, nickel and cobalt. Attendees were interested to learn that NewRange will minimize our environmental impact by utilizing existing infrastructure — including nearby processing facilities, tailings storage, buildings, power resources, roads and railways — and that, for our NorthMet Project, about 70% of the impacted lands would be located on a former mine and industrial site. #NCEW24 #CriticalMinerals

Meet Scott Shuck! As lead maintenance technician, Scott oversees the crew and contractors that handle the care and maintenance of our site, which encompasses former taconite mining facilities. This includes keeping our power and critical equipment such as pumps operating smoothly and safely. A native Iron Ranger and avid outdoorsman there’s no one more interested in and committed to protecting the environment than Scott is. “This is my playground,” he says. “As the project continues to move ahead, I’m encouraged by the funding, expertise and additional resources NewRange has brought to the project to ensure we’re protecting the environment and operating safely.” Scott has seen a lot of changes since he started working on our NorthMet project nearly 20 years ago, when we started the environmental review and permitting process for what will be Minnesota’s first copper-nickel mine.
