Devex World is here! Our CEO & Co-Founder Nithya Ramanathan is on the scene, co-presenting a workshop on "Cutting Through the AI Hype" with Jim Fruchterman, Sid Ravinutala, Michelle Risinger and Anna Gawel. Our team at Nexleaf Analytics is working right now to apply right-sized AI to vaccine cold chain data to better serve our partners in Ministries of Health. And Nithya has a vision for how AI - combined with robust, interoperable, continuous data streams - can transform health systems, even beyond immunization. If you're at Devex World, say hi to Nithya and our Head of Strategic Partnerships Amanda MacArthur at the workshop and all around the event! #AIforgood #techforgood #dataforgood #healthsystemsstrengthening #devexworld #vaccineswork #humanlypossible

"Issues of power outages, unsuitable donated equipment and unharmonised stock lists and inventories create enormous uncertainty for healthcare workers and their patients. This uncertainty demands an ecosystem of change, not just a new product line or standalone database." What a fantastic summary of the whole reason for our #dataforgood #techforgood event at #UNGA. It's time to get serious about medical equipment data tools to serve #healthsystems. Shipping out equipment doesn't mean you've met the #SDGs or improved #healthoutcomes. Medical equipment has to work in context in order to serve patients and meet #globalgoals. Thanks to Meredith Leston for this reflection, and for joining us earlier this week!

Medicine has always been both a science and an art, but why is it still a gamble for so many? With so many blue-sky missions on the books - positioning AI and the usual suspects of emergent tech as panaceas for tackling them - we can become detached from how dire public health infrastructure really is on the ground. Even in economically developed contexts, broadband access is far from guaranteed and medical talent and equipment are poorly distributed with rural areas bearing the brunt of inequity. Looking to LMIC contexts, additional issues of power outages, unsuitable donated equipment and unharmonised stockists and inventories create enormous uncertainty for healthcare workers and their patients. This uncertainty demands an ecosystem of change, not just a new product line or standalone database. Nexleaf Analytics know this well and it was my absolute pleasure to come alongside my colleagues in health for a full-day workshop on the importance and practicalities of Building the Commons for Medical Equipment Data. Here are my key takeaways from the day's presentations and discussions: 1) Thoughtless donation isn't philanthropy, it's just plain waste: Without state of the art donation tracking, auditing and dissemination platforms, donated funds and medical equipment can be under-utilised, misappropriated, misallocated or left to gather dust. A top-level example: mismatched plug sockets and technical documents written in foreign languages just create more work for the already-overstretched. It's up to donors to do the legwork here, however - beneficiaries don't feel like it's their place to make insistences, and nor should they. 2) Don't be afraid to devolve purchasing decisions to the frontlines of care. New research from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation makes it clear that pooled purchasing decisions at the hospital level are extremely effective for modernising the health landscape. Provided that decision-makers are supplied with relevant technical knowledge and prospective vendors are formally vetted, their work proves that innovation is most transformative when it is deliberative. 3) Avoid the 'all the bells and whistles' approach to innovation, especially in LMIC contexts. As per the Technology Paradox, high-tech doesn't necessarily mean high-value or high-impact, and data foundations have to be in place before buzzword-laden products will ever fulfil their promises. When it comes to products, the focus has to be on what products are available, affordable, easy to use, interoperable, durable and easily fixed. When it comes to data assets, solve the standalone pain points (cold chain monitoring, supply chain management, spare parts inventory) before taking on the grand challenges of digital health records or personalised triage systems. Thank you so much to Nexleaf Analytics and Cornell Tech for welcoming me. Now, let's get to work!

Big day yesterday at Cornell Tech for our fantastic Nexleaf Analytics crew! We welcomed 40 participants from 30+ organizations during #UNGA79 to talk #medicalequipmentdata to serve #healthsystems. Some highlights: - Equipment data must serve both #globalhealth goals and #endusers / #frontlinehealthworkers if the tech is to be sustained. - Equipment #datastandards must start simple and be extensible. - All pathways to extending equipment access and #healthequity to reach more people require data to succeed and scale. We're excited to continue these conversations and tackle the medical equipment access crisis together and expand access to best-in-class, useful data tools for #LMIC #healthsystems. More to come! photo: Christopher Combs, Nithya Ramanathan, Martin Lukac, Amanda MacArthur, Erin Ross & Ednah Kiome

Lifesaving medical devices need high-quality, sustainable electricity to do their jobs. In an increasingly climate-stressed world, medical equipment maintenance is a #climate issue. This #ClimateWeek, we're partnering with thought leaders and innovators at the intersection of climate and #healthcare to address the health facility energy crisis, medical equipment waste, and other threats to healthcare access in low-and middle-income countries. Our team is in NYC this week for our convening with Cornell Tech and other #UNGA events! Reach out to Nithya Ramanathan, Martin Lukac, Amanda MacArthur, and Ednah Kiome to hear about how Nexleaf is building a coalition for better #medicalequipment management—or to just say hi! #climateweekNYC #UNGA79 #healthsystemsstrengthening #techforgood

I'm here in NYC, attending dynamic events and meeting so many dedicated and forward-thinking people at #UNGA during #ClimateWeek. But I'm glad I stole a moment to read this important #NewYorkTimesOpinion piece on electrification. According to the WHO*, close to 1 billion people are served by health facilities with unreliable electrification -- or none at all. Consistent and reliable power at health clinics is not only a #climate issue, it's a #healthcareequity issue. That's why our vision for data-infused medical equipment management includes health facility power data too. We at Nexleaf Analytics are thinking about how #renewableenergy resources like #solarpanels for health clinics can be tracked and maintained effectively, just like all other medical equipment should be. Our Sept 25 meeting here in New York, together with Cornell Tech, will help build a coalition dedicated to supporting #healthsystemsstrengthening with medical equipment data. #MoH leaders and #healthworkers need equipment data tools that are interoperable and useful for ALL equipment in the #healthsystem, including electrification resources. Check out our CTO Martin Lukac's guest post at ICTWorks! Martin speaks to how better data systems and tools are needed to help countries navigate out of the current medical equipment breakdown crisis. We at Nexleaf are dedicated to raising awareness of this crisis, and the resulting lack of access to lifesaving medical equipment for millions of people. More and better data tools can reveal precisely where the problems are, which equipment is absent or broken, and what resources are needed to fix what's not working, so that every clinic stands ready to save lives. That's why we're convening a high-level meeting at Cornell Tech in NYC next week on Building the Commons for Medical Equipment Data for LMICs: https://lnkd.in/ggnjGnFd Get in touch if you'd like to learn more about this effort to build solutions health systems need to keep medical equipment functioning and improve health outcomes. #techforgood #digitalhealth #dataforgood #UNGA2024 #healthsystemsstrengthening
