NEXT Door & Window has been a sponsor of the Home Sweet Home Chicago radio show for 5 years. The show is hosted by David Hochberg on WGN 720 AM Chicago Saturdays from 10am to 1pm live from the WGN radio studio and is all about home related topics including home improvement, mortgages, taxes, legal issues, and whatever David and the callers would like to discuss. It takes a special talent to keep the audience engaged for 3 hours on a radio show and David Hochberg and the home experts do a great job answering any and all questions about the home. The show uses a lighthearted approach usually poking fun at David or the expert guest hosts. I will never forget a show 3 years ago when David and the late Joe Hogel of Mega Pros decided to start making fun of me live during the show because I was sounding too robotic. I think they even started playing the Styx song Mr. Roboto. I learned a few good lessons that day about life on the radio. Have a sense of humor and have fun Have thick skin Keep your composure Relax and just have a conversation Remember that you are there to serve the listener Most importantly, keep doing it because experience and repetition are the best ways to improve I have had the privilege to do podcasts, radio shows, interviews, and TV commercials, and each one is a learning experience, especially for an introvert window guy. While vinyl does have its benefits, it also has many drawbacks that many may not be aware of. The 5 most common problems are: 🌱 Vinyl windows have a shorter life span- Because vinyl is susceptible to damage from the sun, moisture, and other natural elements, extreme weather and temperatures can age vinyl windows rapidly.  🌱 Vinyl is prone to warping- Windows made of vinyl tend to expand and contract easily, which causes air to enter the areas around the window. This can not only prevent your window from closing and opening properly, but it can also lead to warping. 🌱 Vinyl is not as energy efficient- In theory, the argon gas in between the panes of vinyl windows is supposed to make them energy-efficient. Unfortunately, since this material contracts and expands so easily, this seal can quickly become compromised. 🌱 Vinyl is prone to seal failure- Like many other problems that plague vinyl windows, seal failure can also be caused by the contraction and expansion of the material during extreme temperature fluctuations. 🌱 Vinyl will offer less glass area, resulting in less of a view- A lost glass area will be a problem if you’re trying to replace your existing wood windows with vinyl. Typically, the old wood window will not be completely removed during the replacement, so the vinyl window will be measured to fit into the old window’s frame, resulting in the loss of glass area.  You can read more about vinyl windows on the blog at https://bit.ly/4aH3WhK.

My stepfather and lifetime business mentor and partner Ron Burns turned 77 on Sunday. Ron married my mom when I was 8 years old and my life as a future entrepreneur began. Ron is old-school and put me in the warehouse from the time I was 9 until I was 15 when I started to install garage doors for his garage door company AR-BE Doors. This taught me the value of very hard work and putting the customer ahead of everything. At that time Ron was a pioneer of same-day garage door service and installation. (many years ahead of Amazon). Ron taught me and many others how to be a problem solver. Never any excuses, but just get it done now. We never went home until the job was done and the customer was happy. Old school hard work every day, every time. One of his favorite quotes is “there is no right way to do a wrong thing”. This meant always have integrity in everything you do for your team and customers. Put this at the center of everything. In 2002 Ron and I became partners starting NEXT Door & Window. I could not be more grateful to my father for showing me the true value of discipline, hard work, setting the standard, striving to be the best, and building trust through integrity. Happy Birthday to my stepfather Ron Burns.
