On April 11, 1962, President John F. Kennedy, in a memorandum to the Secretary of Defense, authorized the wearing of the Green Beret by the U.S. Army Special Forces. He stated, "The green beret is a symbol of excellence, a badge of courage, a mark of distinction in the fight for freedom." This authorization solidified the Green Beret as the official headgear for the U.S. Army Special Forces and symbolized their elite status within the military. #greenberet #specialforces #militaryhistory #tipofthespear #militaryhistory #army

Our Salute to Service honors Kasey Fitts, MBA! Kasey epitomizes resilience, dedication, and trailblazing spirit throughout her remarkable career in law enforcement. Joining the Millersville Police Department in 2007 as its sole female officer, she fearlessly embraced her role. Her bravery was tested on March 12, 2009, when she sustained a gunshot wound to the neck during an incident, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to public safety. Transitioning to the Tennessee Highway Patrol in 2012, Kasey shattered glass ceilings, becoming the first female member of the state honor guard in 2013 and earning the prestigious Top Ten Award in 2015. Not content with her accomplishments, she pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice from Bethel University in 2014 and a Master's in Business Administration from the University of North Alabama in 2023. Throughout her journey, Kasey's dedication to service remained unwavering. Whether protecting the governor as part of the Executive Protection Unit or investigating internal affairs as a sergeant, she blazed trails as the only female in her roles. Her commitment extends beyond law enforcement, as evidenced by her passion for educating youth through Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) and her love for the outdoors, camping, and horseback riding. Kasey Fitts's legacy is not just one of professional achievement but also of inspiring future generations and making a lasting impact on her community. Kasey, Thank you for you dedicated service!

  • Our Salute to Service today celebrates the life of Melvin Goddard who recently passed away earlier this month. Melvin joined the United States Navy where he served in the South Pacific from 1962-1967 on the USS Grapple (ARS-7). His decorations include the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Military service led him to become a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, joining the organization in 1967 in Fort Myers, Florida. He would serve the VFW in many elected and appointed positions at the Post, District, Department, and National levels over the course of his lifetime. Kelly was elected State Commander of the VFW of West Virginia in 2011. We are honored to celebrate Melvin Goddard and his dedicated service to our country and community!

  • Our team was able to help a Gold Star Family with moving lumber off of their property this past weekend in Tennessee. This family lost their grandson in Afghanistan in 2010. He served in the United States Army for the 82nd Airborne. It was an honor to meet and serve this family! The Gold Star family is one that has experienced a loss of a loved one–an immediate family member – who died as the result of active-duty military service.

Thank you to our donors and volunteers that helped a police officer, Sara in Minnesota! Sara is a police officer that experienced a traumatic stroke on duty and was in need of seasonal assistance as she continues to improve. Next Response Foundation was able to provide snow removal for Sara for the winter so she could easily access her driveway and sidewalks around her home.
