Two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to connect with Omar Nuruzade, his company Nexus Lab and their innovative work on "Contrail Reduction Software". Initially, I was skeptical about how such software could be applied in the dense airspace of the EU, thinking it might be impractical and challenging. However, after reading the interview with Stephen Arrowsmith on #Aviation Non-CO2 Expert Network (#ANCEN) -particularly operational trials on contrail prediction and avoidance- I looked deeper into the details. Aviation’s environmental impact extends beyond #CO2 #emissions, with non-CO2 effects like #contrails playing a significant role in climate change. Nexus Lab and the ANCEN are both tackling this challenge from different angles. Nexus Lab focuses on real-time flight optimization to reduce contrail formation, while #ANCEN’s long-term goal is to inform global regulatory frameworks and industry-wide actions to tackle the non-CO2 emissions from aviation, which include contrails. NEXUS Contrail Reduction Software is an operational software tool already used for real-time flight optimization, but ANCEN remains in the phase of developing scientific research and policy strategies. These two approaches are not mutually exclusive but they can complement each other.
