#DYK A spy in a dress was critical to NGA’s 2nd Street location remaining a Union stronghold during the Civil War. 👗📍 Before it was NGA 2nd Street, it was a Civil War arsenal. Union Army General Nathaniel Lyon successfully deterred the Confederate Army from capturing the Arsenal by acting on intelligence he gathered while in disguise as a woman in a carriage. This would ultimately become a pivotal point in the Union’s war effort. Knowing that NGA employees at St. Louis 2nd Street still safeguard the nation from this location is a powerful connection to the past.
