Our problem today is that there is no cohesive design strategy for business services delivered across digital channels. However, rather than dismantling corporate silos, organizations need to change how they work by creating connectivity across silos and across user journeys. In our most recent podcast episode, Kim Flaherty talks with host, Therese B. Fessenden, about her latest report, Architecting a Journey Management Practice and how Journey-centric design is becoming an emerging practice. Kim talks about how Journey-Centric Design is a collaborative design framework that shifts focus from single products to entire customer journeys helping to prioritize the end-to-end experiences rather than just a piece of it, helping customers reach their goals in a seamless, connected way. Eyetracking is a powerful tool in UX research to help us understand how people read online and how they process webpages. If you’re interested in running your own eye-tracking study there’s a lot to consider to ensure your setup produces accurate, reliable data. Here are 3 recommendations for your study: 1️⃣ Pilot test your study. This helps identify setup issues and ensures that the equipment, tasks, and environment are all functioning as expected. 2️⃣ Use a fixed (not rolling) chair for your participants. You don’t want to give participants any reason to move out of range and ruin equipment calibration. 3️⃣ Deliver task instructions either verbally or through the eyetracking software itself. Referencing printed task sheets can break calibration (dependent on the tracker you use). Want to see how we ran an eyetracking study? AI is transforming the way we conduct UX research, making complex tasks faster and more efficient. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned researcher, AI can help you with planning, ideation, and streamlining your process when used effectively. But how exactly does GenAI work? Simply put, one way to think about it is like a complicated game of Mad-libs, where instead of trying to come up with a ridiculous word for a humorous effect, GenAI systems aim to provide a most likely response to your prompt based on context, grammar, word meanings, and a plethora of training data. If you want to explore the nuances further, check out one of Page Laubheimer's recent articles: https://bit.ly/4dsxTCt Wanting more resources on how to get started using AI? Struggling to get actionable insights from usability tests? Well, the quality of your test results hinges on the tasks you make. Whether you’re conducting qualitative or quantitative research, here are some essential tips for creating tasks that lead to better insights: 1. Avoid accidentally providing any clues in your task. ❌ Bad: Sign up for the Alertbox. ✅ Better: Sign up for this site’s newsletter. 2. Try to keep the task emotionally neutral. ❌ Bad: Find a gift for your mom’s birthday. ✅ Better: Find a gift for your friend’s birthday. 3. Always pilot test your tasks! It’ll save you from wasting your resources by accidentally using a bad task and from getting bad data. What more tips for both qual and quant task writing? How can publicly available AI tools can help us UX researchers in our daily practices? Well, Kate Moran and Maria Rosala dive into this exact question in one of their latest articles. Here are a few key takeaways from the article: → AI is currently the most helpful for research planning (ie. desk research & ideation) → AI is great for note taking during interviews…but don't rely on them to conduct interviews unless you want shallow results → AI tools can help with data analysis, but you need to be cautious of mistakes and oversight (treat it like an intern where you have to double check their work) → Use AI to assist with communication with stakeholders (it’s always nice to have a copy editor on hand) Just remember AI won’t replace the critical thinking and creativity that UX research requires—it’s a tool to support those strengths. Recently when Kate Moran spoke at the #UXIndia conference, she got to showcase a GPT she made to help you out with your UX research: Ari, the UX Intern. Now, what can Ari, the UX Intern, help you do exactly? Well, they can help you brainstorm ideas, desk research, come up with interview questions, and more. However, just like many human interns, they are eager to please but don’t always fully understand what you want. They can make mistakes, blindly agree with your ideas, make up fake information, and lack some contextual awareness. When working with AI tools to assist in your research, like Ari, remember to: • Always double-check the AI’s work. • Treat AI-produced documents, communication, and deliverables as a first draft, not a final product. • Think of AI tools as your intern, not your mentor. • Provide ample context and specific instructions for best results. For more on Ari and using AI as an intern, read Kate’s article: https://bit.ly/4duHmZP Want to try out Ari for yourself?
