We were hosted by Nigerian Mental Health last week Saturday. Where we had intense and productive conversations on the strategies to tackle suicide prevention and decriminalization in Nigeria. It was a wonderful time, getting to intimate with like minds and passion. A few persons had left by the time we took a photo. When I go to mental health events and go all the length for mental health, I am reminded of where I am coming from. The trajectory of the change in my career path, and how it feels like the exact thing I was called to do; raising the torchlight for others to see. Our conversation resonated with what we are doing on Kedu, (the therapy booking website), one of our social responsibilities is to offer free therapy to persons who have attempted suicide within 48 hours. While we talk about prevention, we are also keeping post-vention in mind. Either ways, suicide has to be decriminalized in Nigeria for the safety of those who are mentally challenged. #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthinnigeria #depression

We are proud to share that our Program Assistant, Elizabeth Ita is representing Nigerian Mental Health on Day 1 of a pivotal event organized by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Mental Health Program. This 2-day National Stakeholders' Conversation on the Decriminalization of Attempted Suicide is an important step towards addressing suicide prevention in Nigeria. Key Takeaways from Day 1: 1. Nigeria's Position in the Global Context: Nigeria lies within the "suicide belt" of the world, a region with significantly high suicide rates. This highlights the urgency of addressing suicide as a critical public health issue in the country. 2. Suicide is Preventable: Unlike other medical conditions, suicide cannot be "treated" but it can be prevented. Effective intervention strategies and preventive measures can significantly reduce the number of lives lost to suicide. 3. National Suicide Prevention Framework (2023-2030): The Ministry of Health has developed a National Suicide Prevention Framework Strategy as a comprehensive roadmap. This framework outlines measures to reduce suicide rates, provide support for at-risk individuals, and decriminalize attempted suicide. 4. The Importance of Self-Preservation: Every human being has a natural instinct for self-preservation. When someone reaches the point of attempting to take their lives, it signals deep-rooted issues that must be addressed through compassionate intervention and systemic support. These insights emphasize the critical need for ongoing dialogue and action to save lives and improve mental health outcomes across the country. We are honored to be part of this conversation and will continue to work alongside stakeholders to support suicide prevention efforts in Nigeria. #SuicideNotCrimeNG #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealthMatters #NigerianMentalHealth
