Our independent family farmers are committed to sustainable agriculture practices and humane animal care by adhering to strict livestock raising protocols developed with the help of animal welfare expert Dr. Temple Grandin. All our animals are raised outdoors or in deeply bedded pens and are fed a 100% vegetarian diet. They are never given antibiotics or added hormones – ever! Despite growing up in the rural South, I spend most of my days in the big city now. However, it’s nice to get back out to the country every so often to get my feet grounded in the fertile soil that makes up the heartland of America. Last month, I had the opportunity to speak at the 26th Annual Niman Ranch Hog Farmer Appreciation Celebration in Des Moines, Iowa. While you'd think this event would focus exclusively on pigs, the conference entailed a comprehensive discussion and eye-opening reveal of the serious challenges family farmers and ranchers confront to put healthy food on our tables. During this enlightening conference, I heard from leading food advocates, famous chefs, and White House policymakers about the importance of maintaining a healthy food system. I also got to talk with one of my favorite authors, Temple Grandin. But the best part was interacting with the hardworking families who've dedicated their lives to growing and raising high quality food. Last week, we were proud to share our voice in Washington, DC on behalf of small family farmers by asking policymakers to oppose efforts to roll back California’s Proposition 12 and Massachusetts’ Question 3, the country’s strongest animal welfare laws. Along with fellow crate-free farmers and responsible meat companies including ButcherBox and True Story Foods, we met with more than 30 offices and held a briefing for Hill staff to share how Prop 12 and Question 3 have served as a lifeline for many small and mid-size farmers by creating a new, higher value market to sell their pork. Small and mid-size independent family farms have been disappearing over the last 40 years and rolling back Prop 12 and Question 3 would be yet another blow for these producers. Rather than advocating for the rollback of these laws, we encourage the pork industry to help farmers innovate and adapt to serve the consumers of today and tomorrow who broadly support higher welfare practices.

The Hundling family of West Central Iowa were named the 2024 Niman Ranch Sustainable Farm of the Year. This accolade honors the Hundlings for their land stewardship and ongoing commitment to the principles of regenerative agriculture. Their multi-species, biodiverse farm is a model of sustainable practices, from cover crops and rotational grazing using virtual fencing technology to no-till crop farming and edible windbreaks that provide sustenance for humans and wildlife alike.
