Measure. Innovate. Lead.
About us
We are the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. For more than a century, NIST has helped to keep U.S. technology at the leading edge. Our measurements support the smallest of technologies to the largest and most complex of human-made creations. NIST's mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. As we near the end of summer, cooler weather will soon be on its way, meaning the next flu season is near. But our bodies have a way of fighting off pathogens: neutralizing antibodies. NIST biologist Jerilyn Izac and her team are researching these antibodies using measurement science to see if in the future doctors can identify who would most benefit from getting a vaccine against an emerging virus. Human error accounts for more than 80% of cyberattacks. But many organizations fail to address human error when designing their cybersecurity procedures. A NIST summer intern researched the role that human error, such as weak passwords, plays in cyberattacks. His research may help organizations better protect their networks. NIST is offering updated guidance on a wide range of methods people use to prove their identity, from digital wallets and passkeys to physical IDs. The guidance aims to ensure security, privacy and accessibility during the identity-proofing process while accessing government services. This second draft is intended to make access to online services both secure and straightforward, regardless of how a person chooses to prove their identity. NIST is seeking public comment on the draft guidelines by Oct. 7, 2024. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g4jMiEni #InformationTechnology #Cybersecurity #Accessibility #Authentication #Identity

You most likely have heard the term greenhouse gas. They’re gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, and they consist of many different types of molecules from carbon dioxide to methane. But how do scientists measure these invisible and odorless gases? Turns out these greenhouse gases absorb specific colors of light, creating unique “fingerprints” that are used to detect them in the atmosphere. Scientists can figure out the exact concentration of a specific gas by studying the light that has passed through air and measure how much light is missing at colors uniquely absorbed by that gas. Accessibility comes in many forms, such as providing alt text or descriptive text of an image on a website, or generally making information more accessible to a larger audience. For NIST intern Theresa Thomas, she’s helping with the latter. A recent college graduate from William & Mary, Theresa is spending her summer at NIST as part of NIST’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program, or SURF. During her time at NIST, she’s helping with work on a registry database focused on the circular economy — an economy in which materials are designed to retain their value through repeated reuse, repair and recycling, with disposal as a last resort. The registry is a database of resources about sustainability, circularity and recycling that will help anyone working on circular economy research. Theresa’s task is to help put resources that have already been identified into the database and tag them with keywords and add metadata. She also helps find bugs in the database by serving as a fresh set of eyes. The database is still in development and in the beta phase but will be useful for not just researchers in this field but individuals outside of it such as policymakers, academics and those in the broader field of industry. “During this development stage of the registry, I’m at a place where my input makes a difference in how people will use the registry and access these resources. I want it to be accessible to people from the public at large to subject matter experts. My goal is to make the content understandable and the search engine easier so people can find the research they’re specifically looking for.” #Accessibility #Database #Data #CircularEconomy

Last year, NIST and University of Colorado Boulder researchers found that a single breath test may not be the best way to detect recent cannabis use in drivers. Now they’re trying out a different approach: two breath tests administered within roughly an hour of each other. “This is potentially paradigm-changing. If successful, it could pave the way for on-the-spot detection of recent cannabis use by law enforcement.” - NIST materials research engineer Kavita Jeerage Learn more about the new approach: https://lnkd.in/eeGgVVbR #ForensicScience #Forensics #Cannabis #PublicSafety
