👏 NMI faculty John Weatherford, Chris Gerlach, Tyler Mazurek, and Kyla Sterling received an $8,500 Affordable Learning Georgia (ALG) Continuous Improvement Grant to revise and enhance its Open Educational Resource (OER) for the NMI’s Web Development course. ✏️ OERs are free-to-access materials used for teaching, learning, assessment, and research purposes. The Web Development OER, known as the Web Dev workbook to students, is regularly used by over a half-dozen faculty members teaching multiple sections of Web Development for both undergraduate and graduate students, in person and online. 🌟 The ALG-funded revision focused on a comprehensive content audit to remove outdated lessons, updating all lessons to current best practices, better organization of content for accessibility and consistency, an expansion of the WordPress unit, and an upgrade to the site’s decade-old theme to a modern Full Site Editing-compatible theme.

❌ TEDxUGA curator Isabella Martinez, assistant curator Peyton Owens, and presenter advisors Abby Adams and Wesley Morgan were on hand to represent UGA at the recent TEDxAtlanta Salon: Democracy in the Future We Create. ✨As part of the TED Democracy initiative – which aims to spark new conversations among leading thinkers about the challenges democracies are facing around the world – the event emphasized the importance of engaging in dialogue about democracy. 🤝 The TEDxAtlanta / Ideas into Action Salon was an educational and inspiring opportunity for the team. In this discussion-driven experience, attendees explored ways to find common ground in their shared commitment to democracy by focusing on “realistic pathways toward a more vibrant and equitable future.”

🎧 Season 2 of the Georgia on Your Mind podcast is available wherever you listen to podcasts! 🎙️This season, Emerging Media students Kelly Corder, Beau Wallace, and Isabella Aranda go “Beyond the Hedges” to spotlight lesser-known stories of innovation and impact at UGA. From constructing satellites at UGA’s Small Satellite Research laboratory to whale-saving robots at Skidaway Island, this season provides a fresh look at the Peach State (or should it be the Blueberry State? Listen to find out!). 🔗 Check out https://lnkd.in/eRaauZUD to learn more!

🤝 The NMI is excited to announce a new partnership with the College of Public Health’s UGA Institute for Disaster Management (IDM)! 💻 Aiming to enhance quality of care and safety across Georgia’s long-term care facilities, IDM has been working closely with the Georgia Department of Community Health’s Healthcare Facility Regulation Division (HFRD) to develop new training methods that improve the effectiveness of their inspections. HFRD is responsible for training surveyors who inspect and evaluate long-term care facilities, like nursing homes or assisted living communities. ❤️ By joining forces with the NMI to leverage the skills of Emerging Media master’s students and faculty to create a suite of engaging, interactive training modules, IDM and HDRF can ensure that long-term facilities provide the best possible care for residents.

🎧 Earlier this month, a group of NMI students and faculty made their way to Washington, D.C for Podcast Movement 2024, the world’s largest annual gathering of podcasters and industry professionals. 🎙️ Over the course of four days, EM students Hope Thornton, Beth Anne DeKeizer, and Hank Tatum participated in panels and workshops led by industry experts, gaining insight and inspiration for the upcoming season of the “Georgia on Your Mind” podcast. 📱 When they weren’t workshopping the podcast or networking, the students explored D.C.'s landmarks, including the Smithsonian and the National Portrait Gallery, caught a glimpse of the White House, and visited the Cellphone Exhibit: Unseen Connections!
