Mentoring Can Make All the Difference in Nonprofit Leadership! "The age-old question has been asked and pondered for generations: Are leaders born, or are they trained and developed? Based on my personal experience with over 40 years as an Executive Director/CEO hiring and developing staff leadership, both components have validity and merit. But even the top professionals gifted with leadership qualities need guidance, training, and yes, mentoring. Utilizing a mentor for help and support to become an even more effective leader can be a critical component that makes the difference between success and failure. An effective mentor helps you deal with your new level of responsibility. And let’s be honest, all of us have blind spots that need shrinking with feedback from a trusted mentor. In Lindauer's recent newsletter, they shared Eight Common Leadership Styles. "Leadership styles are not fixed or absolute. One approach to managing people is not necessarily “good” or “bad.” Rather, every approach has unique features, and leaders can shift styles to suit an operational context, strategic initiative, tactical opportunity, or mentorship scenario." Ask an NNSC Member: I’m thinking about transitioning to the nonprofit sector. What are my green flags and red flags to consider as I ponder this transition? Tom O'Connor of Tom O'Connor Consulting Group LLC, stated: "Green flags: Transparency of your search committee/hiring leader; clarity around the organizational strengths and challenges; an engaged Board that is in regular conversation with the staff (not simply the CEO); robust financial documentation shared during the hiring process. Red flags: "We have always had a structural deficit, but we're looking to you to solve that"; Lack of exposure to staff and clientele/populations served while going through the hiring process; performative and stagnant DEIA initiatives and commitments that "checked a box" at one moment in time and have since been neglected" Thank you for sharing Tom!

Ask an NNSC Member: What should you be prepared for as you’re transitioning to the nonprofit sector? How would a leader prepare themselves? Tom O'Connor of Tom O'Connor Consulting Group LLC, stated "Board responsibilities (and of course their compensation/lack thereof) create an entirely different dynamic between the for-profit and not-for-profit sector, so your vision for engaging and activating your Board will be a key point to emphasize. Understanding how the vision, mission, and values of the organization guide its programs and culture (and yes, budget) will also be a key element of your preparation so that you can begin with as much alignment as possible." Thank you for sharing Tom!

Ask an NNSC Member: I am an established executive for a Fortune 500 company. I’m considering a nonprofit job. What do I need to know? Colleen Rogers of Campbell & Company, stated "Whenever I talk with someone who is considering a move from the corporate sector to a nonprofit, I make sure to touch on three things: 1. Your compensation will not be the same in a nonprofit. Spend some time researching nonprofit salaries and really assessing your own situation to figure out a salary range that can work for you within the nonprofit market. 2. A nonprofit job is most likely not going to be a slower pace or less demanding. Just because the company isn't "for-profit" doesn't mean the work isn't stressful. 3. Your candidacy will be much stronger if you have prior meaningful experience with nonprofits, either as a volunteer or board member, or both. Make sure to highlight that experience on your resume and in your cover letter, or you may be overlooked in spite of your strong corporate experience." Thank you for sharing Colleen!
