In the classroom, in the field, in museums and aquariums, education plays a vital role in bridging the gap between science and the seafood on our plates. Seafood educators help foster deep connections with the industry and the delicious food they provide, and inspire future generations. They help people make informed decisions about the seafood they eat, ensuring that both marine ecosystems and the seafood industry thrive for years to come. In celebration of #SeafoodMonth, we're highlighting educators who are spreading the love and knowledge of sustainable seafood: https://bit.ly/3Ahq9pf

Did you know today is the 52nd anniversary of the Marine Mammal Protection Act? These mammals are leaping and howling for joy, because since the Act was enacted, no marine mammal species have gone extinct in U.S. waters. Marine mammals are vital parts of our ocean ecosystems, and all marine mammals in U.S. waters are protected under the Act. Its protections have stopped the decline of many marine mammal populations and have actually led to the recovery of several, such as populations of humpback whales, gray whales, gray seals, and California sea lions. This Act set the global benchmark for marine mammal conservation—it was the first piece of legislation to call specifically for an ecosystem-level approach to wildlife protection. We had a memorable day with military families from the DC Metro area at Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary at the end of last month with NOAA Fisheries, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and Coastal Conservation Association Maryland. Participants kayaked through the "ship graveyard" and fished for invasive blue catfish. Despite the rain, it was a day filled with adventure and marine conservation lessons, with bald eagles and blue herons soaring overhead!
